Default rattle in the trunk?

help!
I've had this car now for about 18 months... and I CANNOT find the rattle in the trunk!!!

I've driven around with the seats folded down, and it is definitely louder that way... and it seems to come from the right / rear, upper area.

but I've torn it all apart and can't find it.
it definitely sounds like metal / metal. and something light.. not a heavy sound.

any ideas?

fuel access door release in the trunk?

does it happen in all weather conditions?

Inside the car or outside?

Check the spare wheel well for anything loose....probably not there but it would save a lot of possible dismantling if it is

YUP; all weather conditions. Definitely inside. Wondered about the strut and / or mount, but it continued after shock / spring replacement (no, I didn't replace shocks & springs hoping to find the rattle )
Not in the spare tire well, that I can find.

I was hoping there was something very common about this. guess not.

I've been trying to get my wofe to drive it with me in the trunk, so I can narrow it down.... but she's refusing.

That seems a plausible idea if you ask me due to some risks .

Default Rattle in the trunk

Ive had this ,took me months to sus it.I think ive got some sort of covering missing off my boot locking pin, because when I wrapped the pin with insulating tape(about 15 turns) all went quiet. The tape lasts about 3 months.its worth a try

Hi guys well if its the same problem that i had and mine also sounded like it was in the trunk but wasn't..got the local mechanic to investigate and it turned out to be the rear anti roll bushes which he replaced but for good mesure he replace the rear drop links while he was under the car the result was and is totally rattleless having said that my X has only covered 17000 miles but they were still shot.

Basically tdgs, these are rubber bushings that support the movement of the anti-roll (sway) bar.

This is fairly common on this car for them to cause noises, if you do a search you'll find lots of good reading on the forum regarding symptoms and replacement.

I had a similar issue and my problem was solved with new bushings. You could see air around the bushings when I finally got around to looking at them... no wonder there was a lot of racket!

The rear stabilizer bar bushings. They are on the rear bumper side of the rear axle.

Thanks for that BuckMR2, I have a maddening rattle as described by many here, turning the antiroll bar/swaybar bushes 180* should save some money. Mine is S-type BTW.
