Worked like a charm - thanks

Took 30 seconds - got to be the biggest rip-off at a dealer if they charge £125+ for that

Default Won't start the car.

I replaced a dead battery in my key fob and now it locks and unlocks the doors successfully. However, the car won't start using the key fob I just replaced the batter in. Any ideas? Thank you.

LOL - I came to ask the same thing - I programmed the fob to open/lock the doors and boot and yesterday took the new key to the locksmith to get cut and when I try and start the car with the new key I get a "security failed" message on the dash computer

Quoted £50 to programme it plus £10 if the wrong chip is in there

You may need to reprogram the fob. Very simple to do. This will return it to lock/unlock, open the trunk, etc.

Big Note if you're new to this....
"Program the Fob" is different from "Program the KEY"

Program the Fob is just getting the car to recognize the buttons on the fob again.

Program the KEY is for instances where, like me, you bought a complete new key fob with an uncut blade, had the blade cut to turn the ignition, and then had to have the chip in the KEY PORTION of the key fob programmed to the car. THIS is what the dealers are charging a lot of money for and many have found locksmiths that can do it for less. THey need to have the equipment to do it and if they do a lot of car keys, or are a big locksmith shop, they may very well have that equipment.

The key fob is, essentially, 2 parts. The half that contains the key blade and its corresponding chip (which is what has to be programmed to the car) .... and the half containing the buttons (which are programmable by you)

Does that help?

fourth time
5 Remove key from ignition

for each fob if it has been programmed correctly
7 Press unlock/lock/trunk etc to make sure everything works

Payspecial attention to point 6, every fob you have must be programmed at the same time although you only need to use one key in ignition.
I have a 2002 X-Type and this process does not work for me. Neither does the second process posted here to activate my key fobs. What else can I do?

If you are replacing the key and trashing the "old"key, carefully open the key housing. You'll see a time capsule in a 'pocket' on the side opposite the groove for the closed key.

Move that old capsule into the new key housing. That capsule is the RFID chip that the ignition is looking for.

Go to Setup and config and CLEAR ALL KEYFOB TRANSMITTERS.

Then configure the keyfob transmitters to the car.

I did not get it to work, I have replaced the battery and still it doesn’t work. My Jag is a 2003 S Type. When the key is in the ignition I hear the chime constantly. What else can be wrong?
