Default Reconditioned Propshaft

Hello all, I've read a lot about propshaft removal even watched a video or two on you tube. I have just bought a replacement propshaft which has been reconditioned by Dunning and Fairbank Ltd (New joints and centre bearing).

Both the Haynes and workshop manual (page 205 W/manual) state that a replacement propshaft needs to be and i quote "If a new driveshaft is to be installed align the ‘H’ on the rear drive axle flange with the paint mark on the driveshaft".

Simple enough if my recon propshaft has a paint mark on it, if it doesn't what would you recommend/advise? I am assuming the paint mark has something to do with balancing when the propshaft was off the car and reconditioned.

Any assistance and advice gratefully received.

That is so bizarre; just got mine back last night after having the transfer box changed (plus a bunch of other stuff) and now can hear the propshaft bearing whining
I'm also in Wiltshire.
Tell me more about where you had your propshaft refurbished!
i don't think that it matters how you align the flanges; unless you balance the propshaft whilst it is attached to both axles it can't make any difference.
Unless it's oval?

Steve M - Hi,

Ive actually bought a reconditioned propshaft from a Jaguar dealership who had the work done by Dunning and Fairbank Ltd. My knackered propshaft is still fitted.

I too had a whiney centre bearing and had that changed by a local garage. The net result was the whining went but the car vibrated at motorway speeds, something i didn't have before the bearing change.

I took my car to Chard engineering in Bristol, a propshaft specialist who removed the shaft and diagnosed excessively worn couplings at either end of the shaft. Even i could see and feel the issue when the prop was removed. Chard specialise in props and Nigel there was really helpful. I would recommend Chard if you want a bearing fitted they will do it properly and they have all the kit etc other than that there quote for a refurbish was pretty steep.

Apologies i don't understand you comment about balancing the prop when its attached to the axles, do you mean align? From what ive been told balancing of a prop is done by machine with the prop dismounted from the car. The prop has to be serviceable in order to get the correct reading if balance weights need to be applied.

Thanks Dell,

I have read that before but wasn't sure whether i could do that with the X type as the holes on the Centre Bearing bracket may not allow enough if any lateral movement. The holes are elongated so the bracket can move fore and aft but not necessarily to much left and right.

Its a weekend job anyway so i will see!

@Steve, I'd look up here on the forum greasing the propshaft bearing.

Dell, the bearing was greased a couple of years ago so may do it again.
Ken, what I meant was, if the shaft is balanced off the car then its orientation shouldn't matter once it is back on the car; I can't see why there would need to be a flange mark?
