Default Relay amps?

Could someone please verify What the Dip Beam and Main Beam relays should be in my 2004 x type sport 80k. I thought the dip was a 5 pin 40 amp, but there is a 4 pin, and I want to just but the main. I think it should be 5 pin 20 amp, is that correct.

I posted awhile ago that my high beams won't turn off, and I had just pulled the fuses, but now it's inspection time. I ordered a used column switch, and as far as the switching of relays that I saw Thermo suggest, my car seems different from the suggestions. swapping R11 for R9 and R15 and R17. R9 was a 5pin and r11 was a 4. Then I had nothing in R17 to swap with R15. Sorry if this is confusing, it's probally becuz I am.

Thanks again

X-Tyre, look in the driver's door jam and send me the month and year that your car was built. In 2004, part way through the year, Jaguar renumbered the fuse boxes (and did some other minor wiring tweaks). So, if you happened to catch a post where I was talking about say a 2003 vehicle and you have a later 2004, yes, the relay numbers will be different.

As for the relay ratings, the smaller relays should be rated for 20 amps with the larger relays rated for 30 amps. Granted, as long as you look on your relay, it should say something like "20A" or "30A" (aka, 20 amp rated, or 30 amp rated), as long as you get that current rating or higher, then you are fine. Where you have issues is going with a relay that has a lower current rating.

Thanks for the help! The manufacture date is 9/2003. I hope this explains something. hate to mention it again, but do you know if the dip beam relay should be a 4 or 5 pin? The guy at the auto parts store said I could do damage if I put a 5 pin in there, however that's all I see in a 40a and I did pull out a 4 pin. The slots are there for the 5 pin, I'm not sure if that's always the case.

Thanks again,

Wes

You can use a 5-pin relay. There is no electrical connection in the distribution box to that extra pin.

X-Tyre, like Mark said, you can use either a 4 or 5 pin relay for the dip beam relay (R9). For the Main beam relay (R15), you must use a 5 pin relay there as the extra pin is what pushes power out to the fog lights. If you want the electrical diagrams to your car, let me know. Maybe that will help you out if you know how to read electrical diagrams. I just need you to PM me your e-mail addy.

Thanks guys,
I really appreciate the help. That 5 pin for the main/fog is the 20amp that's rectangular in shape correct?

If you have a diagram that's different from the one on this link -http://www.jagrepair.com/images/AutoRepairPhotos/x4052004.25en.pdf - yes I'd like to have it please.

Thanks again,
much appreciated

Wes

Have a great evening!

X-Tyre, yes, the diagram is different. The link that you have is for the post renumbering of the wiring system (ie, the 2004.25 model year and after). PM me your e-mail addy and I will send it your way.

Well, after all the messing with the relays. I ended up replacing the blinker/high beam lever, which turned out to be a simple job and that took care of my issue. Thanks again to everyone for the help!
