Smile Replacement Hood-Lift Gas Struts

Howdy to all,
Was checking the Engine Oil (dipstick) this morning... when I heard a hissing noise? just moments later - down came the Hood!
Luckily, I was able stop the imminent crash as my arm caught the weight.

So, it seems I will now need a new/replacement gas strut - as the other remaining functional strut cannot hold the Hood up.

My question is; Should I replace both of the Hood-lift struts ?
(I assume these cannot be repaired)

If new units are required.... and bearing in mind my Location (AUST) can anyone Identify the manufacturer and part number - so that I may go to any local gas strut retailer to obtain replacement(s)

I have found eBay sources - but they are all ex-germany and so the shipping
costs to OZ are outrageously high and cost prohibitive.

All help very much appreciated. ......

Best regards,

G'day Lcgi,

I got some for my XJ12 a number of years ago from RockAuto and they were the cheapest by a long way even including the postage.

I just had a look on their website and they have them avaiable and landed in Brissy will cost you around $60 USD for a pair. Personally I wouldn't just replace one.

RockAuto Mobile Catalog

Look under > body>lift support

Cheers,
Jeff.

Hello Jeff,

Many thanks for your suggestion and remedy for my issue (its appreciated)

I did a little more homework myself for locally sourced parts and found a great place to obtain suitable replacements. All Aussies should check it out.

Viz: Welcome to Strut Specialists - Gas struts, gas springs, gas stays, stays, gas lifts, gas lifters, stabilus, tokico, strong arm, alko, suspa, suspender, lift o mat, struts, strut regas, damper, gas dampers, stainless steel, lifteasy, lift easy, maxi l

No, they were not as cheap as your imported option..... but, I was able to get New Parts (pair) conveniently from the next suburb from me (fitted free) and installed on my car within the hour.
Obviously, this convenience and local warranty is significant.

Thanks again for your help.

I see you've solved the problem!

For the most part, they are sold in pairs. I also got mine from Rock Auto, about $35 US for the pair IIRC; literally a ten-minute refit for the pair.
