Default Replacement Lug Nuts

After being driven more than a half-a-bubble off plumb trying to figure out what was ticking, I discovered it to be the less-than-stellar two piece lug nuts that Jaguar decided to be suitable for our cars. The covers are easily damaged, and more than a little likely to come apart, especially when torqued down by ham-fisted tire techs with their impact guns set on 'kill'.

Shopping for replacements was not so thrilling; an OEM set can cost $200 or better, a decent replacement aftermarket set is available from only one supplier, and even on eBay or Amazon, still $100!

Why? They are simply 12mm x 1.5 pitch mag seat lug nuts, what is so unusual about them?

Here it is: The caps are 19mm.

That is the ONLY thing keeping you from being able to find a suitable replacement.

The solution? Break out the mic and the vernier, measure them up, and find a suitable replacement. What fits? Mitsubishi, Chrysler Sebring, Isuzu, Lexus, Toyota, there are millions of 'em. Dorman 6111-117 is the single part number.

Best match, high-quality single piece lugs are for the Toyota Scion, hunt around and you can find a full set under $30US.

Physical differences: 37mm height versus 44 for the stock, and a smaller washer at the seat, since the new nut doesn't need to be spaced to sit right. They seat perfectly, don't stick out as far, look a little 'beefier' in the wheel, and won't come apart, since they are one piece.

Here is the main difference: the nuts are 21mm. I suggest getting a half-inch breaker bar, a three inch extension, and a 21mm deep impact socket for your trunk, and throw away that Ford spec'ed piece of junk lug wrench in your spare well. The only thing that is good for is spinning the caps off the factory lugs anyway.

Just a reminder: factory recommended torque on the lugs is 76 lb.ft. dry for the alloys.

thanks for sharing that info, I've got a set of Mitsubishi nuts that look the same and wondered if they would fit the S-Type but haven't got around to trying them yet.

The thread pitch and depth are wrong on those, and you'd still need the washers.

That was one of the potentials that I looked at.

I had to replace one lug nut on my xtype. I ended up going with one from a Lincoln LS. Its the same thread pitch and socket size. The only difference is the very end of it. Fits perfect though. I think I spent $2 on one at my local auto zone. $2 x 20 =$40 for a set. I can live with the different look to save $160 over factory.

Default Same Situation

I purchased spare lug nuts for my 2003 X-Type 2.5. I purchased them at a Jaguar dealer and they were $4/ea. I purchased them in November of 2010. I also purchased the special socket for removal. Hope this helps. Bill in Wayne County OH

And make sure to get a new lug wrench since the factory one won't fit. I got the Gorilla wrench.

Exclamation

Believe it or not, COSTCO tire has many different size nuts. They look good, and are really a good buy. Just a thought

I'll bet SNG Barratt's are a lot better quality that the eBay types.

...I can't use them because we are away so much that we can't usually be there to sign for the package

Which are, unfortunately, the ones we all need to replace. :-(

Allow me to re-phrase. They are the 'new version' factory originals.
