Default Replacing bulbs in visor vanity mirrors

I did some looking around using the search function but did not turn anything up on replacing the bulbs in the vanity mirrors on the visors. I am changing out the lights on the car, including all of the interior lights, and would like to replace the yellow OEM ones used in the vanity mirrors. Has anyone done this or can anyone at least tell me what size bulb(s) are used? Also, I did find some instructions on removing the vanity mirror to repair it, but I am not sure if you have to be this drastic to simply replace the bulbs, so if anyone has actually done this I would appreciate some instructions as to what is necessary. Thanks

Hey tarheel, don't think I've saw a how to / FAQ on this to be honest.
Having said that I did all my exterior bulbs on my A6 and then replaced the map reading lights, courtesey lights etc as well with led replacements to get rid of that yellowish look.

To be honest, most of it is really pretty straightforward and probably will be for the X too. Have a look and a play around and I'm sure you'll know what I mean. Get one of the bulbs out and you'll soon see what you need. You could look at replacing them with leds too?

Did a bit of checking for you and found this - should be fairly simple
After lifting the mirror flap you can just make out a small indent for a screwdriver i used my finger nail and the complete cover with both lenses pops off. The lamps (a thin bullet type) are under there.
Hope this helps.

As Jim stated, If you open the flap to the mirror you will see on both sides an indenture small enough for a small screwdriver, pop it out n you will expose the bulbs. I went and had a look at it after reading your post because I am waiting on my LEDs to transform my entire interior and I happened to forget about the mirrors!!

The only problem is that I cannot identify the type of bulb it is... It has 12v3wplx engraved on the metal parts but i can't find anything on that combinaTion. Any ideas anyone?

They advertise a mini festoon led for vanity mirrors here in the middle of the page: Vanity Mini 3 Led SMT Festoon http://autolumination.com/festoon.htm I am not sure if that will work or not.

JagXType360, tell me more about your conversion, such as source, specific type of LED, etc. I have changed out interior lights before, in an Accura, and I used regular incandescent lights, rated as "Xenon" and using blue glass to change the color temp. They worked fine. I ordered some from the company at the link above, but I had two problems. First, the foot well lights do not seem anywhere near as bright to me, especially compared to the pic I found of an LED application used by Wankel in this thread: https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/s...or+light+bulbs . And second, while the dome lights are whiter then OEM, they are not as "white" as the map lights now and it really shows a difference when dome and map are on together (not often I know but it bugs me).

I inquired and was told that it was more a product of the application (type of bulb, plastic lens, etc) and there was nothing they could do. I was thinking about switching out to LED and using superbrightleds.com, as other have used. But I noticed that the 194 and the festoon have different color temps (9000 versus 7000) so I am really starting to wonder if it will make any difference. If you have gone through the conversion I would appreciate any info you can provide. Thanks

Tarheel72, I ordered all the bulbs to completely transform my interior from the dull yellow lighting into the bright white look most new cars have now. I still haven't recieved them so I will make sure I do a before and after pic to show you the difference between the two as well as it being a very simple DIY project

I ordered this LED, http://www.v-leds.com/Exterior-LED/C...-p6985865.html , for my normal 194 bulbs, and for my dome lights I ordered http://www.v-leds.com/Interior-LED/D...-p6283693.html

I have ordered from this website plenty of times and it has never let me down! Very good quality LEDs.\

Also, the LEDs you linked to I don't believe they will fit in the vanity mirrors... check out this write up I just did to see the picture of the guts of the vanity mirror. https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/s...ad.php?t=30814

The OEM dome festoons are 44m. I hope these that you ordered are long enough to fit in the clips. It might be close.

reviving this old thread cause im now looking for these lights in LED too. AutoZone dont have a part number at all on this light nor is it listed in sylvania's parts catalog. after looking at auto store all i see so far for a replacement is using led strips and wire them into the existing wires. gonna keep looking there has to be an easier way. i measured bulb and it is 35.9mmx6.21 so i dont think it will work. the nipples on end of bulb actually hold the bulb in place

Default LED Replacement Bulbs

For my 2005 X-Type Jaguar the bulbs are 36mm. So to replace with an LED bulb, the key is to get a 36mm festoon type LED light, available in various intensities.

Here is a search on E-Bay that should produce thousands of options, most from China and Hong Kong, but also available domestically if you are in a hurry and willing to pay more.

Yeah did that and ordered some. They were too big in diameter, none on eBay work (see my post on the problem) and blowing fuses. I know I'm diligent. I have since found some just a fraction larger in diameter than originals in another site. They're on there way.
