Replacing starter?

Replacing starter?
I have a starter that is drawing too much power, and will not start my 2003 X-Tyoe. I have a mechanic that can fix it for about $275 + $125 for a new battery. (which the starter has killed) However it looks like I can get a new Bosch starter for about $100. Is this a job that is pretty straight forward if I were to attempt it myself?
I am moderately mechanically inclined, as I have installed a new stereo in the car, and replaced brake pads on my own, just never done a starter.
Let me know if there are any special tools needed or what to watch out for if I attempt myself, and if anyone would suggest that I don't try it, please let me know why?

I attempted this, was unable to access all of the bolts. I'm not very mechanically inclined so I just took it to the shop. I think you could at least try it, there is a process in JTIS you could look up. I think in total there are just four bolts to take off, I just couldn't access the smaller one on the starter sort of behind the main wire coming from the battery. It's a little tight. You'll also need an extention for your socket, pretty long one too, to undo the two bolts holding the starter on.
You won't hurt anything, even I was able to reassemble after my failed attempt. Sorry couldn't be more help, hopefully someone else could talk you through it.

No problem. I also bought the Bosch starter online and had it installed. The new starter's been great (knock on wood). My car was making a screeching sound when starting first thing in the morning. After it was warm, the car wouldn't make the sound at ignition the rest of the day.
Through this forum I learned that clutch dust can sometimes gum up the gears. Once the starter was removed, it was interesting to see how gummed up the gears had actually become. Some people on here have cleaned them and placed the starter back on. Me, I figured since it's off might as well replace.
Let me know how it goes.
Best,
J

It's not about being elite. It's about having a grasp of the language you use every day. Now, should I have called Mr. Black out? No. Was I a bit drunk when I did? Yes. And apparently I made a poor choice. But, I would still urge folks to take a moment and think when drafting anything, even in an informal venue like this board or on Facebook or wherever.
So, Mr. Black I do apologize.
