Wonder if anyone can help me here?

I had a PVC pipe rupture about a month ago, thanks to a post on the site I quickly found the culprit and reparied it.

However, the engine check light remains lit - I am sure as a result of a stored error code.

Does anyone know of a way I can turn it off without paying a garage for use of an OBD reader?

A good obdII reader is $50-60 why not just buy 1. Do it yourself and you can pull your own obdII codes and clear in the future and do other cars as well. But then again maybe you didnt get ALL the culprits, like brake booster vacuum line or the upper and lower intake manifold tuning valve orings

 

Mr. Brutal, I want to buy an OBDII scan tool and have noted that there are hundreds of them on Ebay. Can you advise me on a preferred brand or brands to stay away from. Thanks for your help.

I went to Autozone and bought an Actron unit, I think it's a CP9125 or close, cost was around 50.00. Reads and clears, you can also remove the positive off the battery, but you might have issues with the radio code etc.

 

I faced the same dilemma with a CEL that was driving me nuts on another car. I was concerned about buying something I would only use once, so I started looking at the cheap units that can clear a code. During the process I popped into Pep Boys to look around and lo and behold they had one of the good OBD II models on super closeout sale and I snapped it up. I can't count the number of times I've used it. It would have been a good investment even at the full $149 price. Even if you can't or choose not to perform a repair yourself you are informed as to what the issue is before you take it in to the shop. This knowledge alone can be invaluable in controlling your repair costs. Buy one, it's money well spent.

 

disconnecting the battery doesnt do anything except make you have to reset the windows, clock and radio. It can help with screwy module faults, but youll never clear codes on any 1996 OBDII or newer car

 

I had the gearbox fault and a fault for a vacuum leak from a worn gasket on my gas cap. I disconnected the bettery for a few minutes (15?) and it got rid of the CEL, saved the codes internally but got rid of the lights and limp mode for me.

Mind you I could have simply driven for a few days and the CEL would go out as the computer cycled through if the problem was gone. But you're right to entirely erase the codes you wil need a OBDII reader.
