Default Rough idle when Cold

I have a 2003 with 83,000 on it. Runs great except when cold. Real rough until it warms up. The check engine light is on but it's reading cat converters which I know isn't the problem because it doesn't make sense and previous owner changed. I figure the code reader at Auto Zone may not be the final word plus there are codes they don't understand. Runs too good to be major, any ideas?

I don't get why you want to dismiss the given indicators. Just because a cat code (Which one?) is showing it doesn't necessarily mean that the cat is defective, it might just saying it can't handle the quality of exhaust it's being given. That could be a fault with the upstream or downstream HO2 sensors or their heaters (Especially as it's a 'cold' problem!) or their wiring.

Try putting the codes on this Forum - there are plenty of good guys who certainly understand them even if your Auto Zone don't.

You have vacuum leaks. And depends on if the previouse owner installed a oem cat or a cheap aftermarket that barely last a yr. I never recommend cheap cats on a xtype as there is too much labor to change(unless theyre going to sell it) because it will come back on. But fix the vacuum leaks which on yours will be all the usuall suspects.

I wasn't ignoring the codes, just trying to figure where to go next. I will get the codes and post them. I was just saying these cats only have about 5,000 miles on them so I don't want to follow the advice of the mechanic who wanted to change them, I figured I'd be where the previous owner was. Only problem is when it's cold and that just doesn't sound like a cat.
