Running lean, gearbox fault, cruise not available
Just got a used 2002 x-type and the next day the engine light came on. The code says it is running lean. I also have gotten messages saying "cruise not available" and "gearbox fault". I am obviously going to take it back, but they will try to fix it.
Any suggestions of what could be wrong?
I feel like I got ripped off.

Csurman, from the sounds of things, you have 1 of 2 issues. You more than likely have a bad mass air flow sensor (MAF sensor). This can cause the car to think that you are flowing less air than you really are, making the O2 sensors think there is a different problem. The fix for this is fairly cheap and easy. The other possibility is a problem with the throttlebody. If this is the case, make sure they pay for it, especially if they said that the car came with a 30 day warranty and it is well within that time. A new one runs about $2000 as I recall. Even a rebuilt one is around $500 or so.
Both of the problems I talk about can also stem from the plug associated with the components getting damaged. This will cause the computer to get erroneous readings, leading to the computer putting in the wrong amount of fuel.
See what the shop says and then go from there. If they do not seem to want to play, then walk away saying something to the effect of "I am going to tell all of my friends not to buy their vehicle here.........". That will tend to make them listen a little bit.
