the old fella has just bought some s type alloys for his x type and i think we need spacers as they are catching the rear links, what size spacers do we need?

 

That would depend on the width of the wheel and the offset. I would suggest putting back on one of the X type wheels and measure the distance between the rim and a fixed point then measure the same place with the s Type rim on to see the difference.
