Hi all,
I have recently purchased a 2006 2.2D X-Type. The aux belt snapped en route home from picking up the car. Put it down to being old and perished from sitting for 6 months, but today it has just snapped again after a month or so.
- Air con was disabled as a precaution (fuse pulled) - so no load there
- Tensioner seemed to bounce around / vibrate a good deal at idle
- Belt had actually jumped half off the aircon pulley when I heard it mid self-destruction
Most likely scenario I would assume is a bad tensioner that isn't holding firmly enough. A relatively easy fix to install a new tensioner, but any other likely culprits?
>>EDIT>> I have just read some of the posts about the crankshaft pulley - sounds like that may also need some attention... any good way to identify if it is at fault?
Cheers
Iain

Have a look at the crankshaft pulley whilst the engine is running to see if the pulley stays in alignment with the other accessory pulleys.
You can also remove the serpentine belt and see if the pulley is separating.

Thanks @NBCat , am I right that the crankshaft pulley is constructed in two parts - the centre (bolted to the crank shaft) and the out ring - coupled to the centre via a "flexible" coupling? So I suspect I'll see the centre tracking well and the outer ring out of alignment.

Yes, if the pulley is separating, you may be able to find one in a breaker's yard.
So CS pulley and tensioner replaced - and all running nice and smoothly again, right until I turned on the aircon, and melted the brand new belt
Compressor seized I reckon.
Any warnings getting the AC compressor replaced? Won't be a DIY job for sure.

Hi I have the same problem. "seized compressor" The petrol vehicles is an easy ISH fix. unfortunately the diesel is a different story. Not worth fixing on my car. Would cost more than the car is worth. So the fuse stays out.
