belt squeal

belt squeal
I drove the car today for the first time in 6 weeks and heard what I assume to be belt squeal under hard acceleration.
The car has done 135,000 miles.
What is the consensus on items to replace, just the belt or belt, idler and tensioner?
Also is anyone aware of a good "how to" for this?

'While you're in there' I'd at least replace both the idler pulleys along with the belt. You can use the same item in both places: Dayco 89016, and there is a Gates equivalent.
The tensioner itself might be fine and the squeal just due to the belt stretching? There is a belt stretch indicator on the tensioner body.
On my 98, it was a simple job as everything was easy enough to get to, but I know the plumbing around the front is a little different on your later car.
I had just enough room to get a breaker bar and socket on the tensioner pulley bolt to release the belt. BTW, this bolt has a left-hand thread.
There's a diagram somewhere on here showing the routing for the belt.
HTH,
Mike

OK, there's quite a few differences from the 4.0, and you don't need a socket on the breaker bar to pull the tensioner back. The pulley is still 76mm so the Dayco should hold good. I guess with the reversal of the tensioner that the pulley bolt may not be left-handed.

Looks like you need a long breaker bar with a 3/8th end to release the tensioner, I was going to weld one up but they are so cheap on ebay I just bought one.

You'll have a little more room to work with than those of us with SC engines, but I'll tell ya what: The job is a breeze if you just take a few minutes to pull the radiator fans out first. (Don't drop the two nuts or bolts!). And I agree with those that say change everything. After this many years and miles, it'll give you peace of mind, and take those items off the near-future to-do list. The only pulley I wasn't able able to source was the SC tensioner, but it's all quiet up there since, so no worries.
You might also want to put in a new water pump while you're up there. Might as well, it's gonna go soon if you've got 130K on her.
