Default Speed-Dependent Knocking From Front End

Hi guys,

I'm having a weird issue that just started today. I drove out of my driveway and went kind of slowly and I could hear a knocking sound coming from the front end. I'm fairly certain it isn't the sway bar bushings, and I'm also pretty sure it doesn't have to do with the engine because it isn't RPM-dependent either.

It only happens at around 5-25 mph and gets faster and faster as I increase speed. Also, if I go like 20 mph and I brake lightly, the sound goes away immediately, and then if I let off the brakes when I'm still over 5ish mph, the sound comes back. It's getting louder the more I drive it, so I'm getting kind of worried that something's going to break while I'm driving.

Does anyone know any common issues with X-Types that have these symptoms?

Thanks in advance, any help is appreciated!

ez, I would say to first check the tightness of your lugnuts. After that, lift each wheel off of the ground and attempt to turn the wheel by hand from outside of the car. Does the wheel move a little bit side to side when the tie rod does not move? If yes, then your front wheel bearing is starting to go. It just so happens that at faster speeds, the wheel essentially becomes a big gyro and can not wobble.

If the wheel does not move side to side, with the wheel off of the ground, use a pry bar or something and attempt to push the bottom of the tire in towards the center of the car (do not push hard enough to kick the car off of the jackstand). Does the tire move any now? If yes, you have either a bad strut bearing or a bad lower ball joint.

Having a second person with you to watch for movement is handy.

If the suspension parts thermo mentioned checks out then also look towards a worn or warped rotor.

If the noise goes away when braking, I would inspect the caliper slide pins/bushings and brake pad hardware. could be as simple as a missing clip or worn bushing.
