Speedo
Hi All......long time lurker, but first time poster. Excellent site by the way...
Anyway...I have an 02 plate X-Type 2.5 SE and a few weeks ago the speedometer began 'flickering'. Last week on the motorway I got up to 70mph and the speedo dropped to register approximatey half speed. It's recording about half the actual road speedthe car is travelling at and it's had an effect on the trip counter, mileometer and fuel consumption indicator in as much as they are recording much less than they should.
Has anyone any ideas? Does anyone know what's going on with it or have experience of this? Also is this likely to need a full instrument panel replacement?
All comments and suggestions gratefully accepted
Cheers

RE: Speedo
Does it do this with no other warning lights like the check engine light or ABS light on? The speedo gets its input from the ECM which in turn gets its input from the ABS module which gets the actual road speed from the wheel speed sensors. Most cases of speedo problems I've seenwere caused by wheel speed sensor problems but they almost always cause either the ABS or check engine light to come on or both.

RE: Speedo
Mine had this shortly before a rear wheel speed sensor fell off....what happens is the sensor ring corrodes and can loosen before coming off.As it isnt fixed in place correctly it can lead to incorrect speedo readings. These speed rings are a common failure and Jaguar UK realised that problems started further north in Scotland and gradually appeared more down South (salt on roads?).
Saying that mine also had a new speedo under warranty before I bought the car but unsure why but I would guess its probably a speed sensor.

RE: Speedo
Thanks for the posts.
There is actually a fault with the rear nearside 'ABS ring'....it broke in two before I bought the car. I onlybought it a few weeks ago and my mechanic knew of the fault when Ipurchased it (at £2500 for an 88,000 mile, immaculate example it was a bargain!). He pulled the fuse because the ABS was always kicking in and said that he could fix the fault in the next week but that the car was fine to drive (cadence breaking required in an emergency) So the ABS warning light is permenantly on. The 'flickering' of the speedo and subsequent false reading happened at the same time so I'm hoping that the new ABS ring will cure the fault
Thanks again guys.
