Default Speedometer died!

My speedometer stopped working couple months ago and every now and then will work for about a minute and then drops down to zero again. The odometer works though and I pulled the whole dashboard off and checked all solder joints and they all look good. I’m thinking maybe it’s the sensor at one of the wheels. Question: Which wheel actually tells the car how fast it’s going?

This was linked to my thread and the cats speedo is still working great. Twice a year I pull both rear sensors and spray a rust prevention oil inside while turning the wheel. I’ve put close to 20,000 miles on it since this fix

Thanks Dell!
looks like my right rear axel “ring” split. Left rear looks like it’s about to separate soon as well.
ill be replacing both as they have about 130k miles on them. Good info on how it “averages” both wheels to determine the speed.

This vehicle was owned by multiple people prior to me a year ago and nobody took care of it. I spent more time replacing parts than I do driving it! It’s been worth it though it’s a fun car to drive.

What kind of oil do you use that would stay “put”?

It’s some basically penetrating oil that I got from work. Except once it dries it leaves a waxy residue behind. It will wash off with direct water spray but where those rings are located they don’t get hit with water so it lasts a good long time

Fluid film works, too.
Will not dry, crack, freeze or readily wash off.
