Default Speedometer and odometer problem

My X-type Jaguar's speedometer has been just shutting off at random times and at first I figured it was a fuse but then it turns back on too. The odometer does the same thing. Does anyone have any ideas as to why it does that?

Had a similar problem with my 2006 X-Type. Removed the instrument cluster (fairly easy to do) and sent it out to a speedometer repair shop that fixed it. Something to do with one of the electronic gizmos on the unit. Don't try to buy a used cluster and install it; they're apparently coded to the individual car ECU and you might have to take the car to a dealer ($$$) to have re-programming done.

Take a look at the back of the instrument cluster where the harness plugs in. Look at the solder joints next to the connector. I bet you will find that atleast one of them will have a "black hair" in the solder. This is actually a crack. A bit of time with a soldering iron will fix this.
