Default Air leaking from this part! Please help to identify!

I had the check engine light come on and had the codes ran. Ended up being P0171, so I checked all hoses and found the check valve in the brake booster vacuum hose was deteriorated. I replaced that hose and heard an even louder "hissing" sound coming from this area in the engine bay. I used the a piece of rubber hose to listen at the site, and heard it loud and clear. Anyone know what this part is?

So far 6 members have read this question but no one with an X-Type knows what it is!

I know. Making me wonder what I've got myself into trying to fix this code! But after some digging I found out that the part is the Intake Manifold Tuning (IMT) valve. Apparently they have some O-rings, and mine need to be replaced. Anyone know the part number for these bad boys?

Guide for replacing the seal:

Installing a new upper IMT valve O-ring seal.
Open hood and install fender protection covers.
Disconnect the IMT valve electrical connector and reposition harness.
Remove the IMT valve securing bolts and displace and remove the IMT valve from the intake manifold. Remove and discard the O-ring seal.

Fig. 1: IMT O-Ring Upper Seal

Using suitable lubricant, lubricate a new O-ring seal.
Install the new O-ring seal to the IMT valve.
Install and align the IMT valve to the intake manifold.
Install and tighten the IMT valve securing bolts.
Reposition harness and connect the IMT valve electrical connector.
Remove fender protection covers and close hood.

Install a new lower IMT valve O-ring seal
Open hood and install fender protection covers.
Disconnect battery (see Workshop Manual, section: 414-01).
Remove intake manifold (see Workshop Manual, section: 303-01, SRO 30.15.01).
Remove the lower IMT valve securing bolts and displace and remove the lower IMT valve from the intake manifold. Remove and discard the O-ring seal
Using suitable lubricant, lubricate a new O-ring seal.
Install the new O-ring seal to the lower IMT valve.
Install and align the lower IMT valve to the intake manifold.
Install and tighten the lower IMT valve securing bolts.
Install the intake manifold (see Workshop Manual, section: 303-01, SRO 30.15.01).
Connect battery (see Workshop Manual, section: 414-01).
Remove fender protection covers and close hood.

Got a question for the Jag Techs- Why does the battery have to be disconnected for the lower seal and not the top seal?

Excellent procedure from reyesl.

The Parts Manual diagram is a bit clearer than the JTIS ones:

Also confirms the upper and lower seals are the same.

Re the battery. I guess its because you are removing more than just 1 connector.
There are several different wires to unplug IIRC

Cheers

It's because the procedure specifies removing the intake manifold for the lower one. That entails removal and disconnection of a lot more "stuff", not just one connector.

Just one of those "traditional" things to list in a service procedure.

Cheers,

I just replaced mine this afternoon.

True- the lower IMT actuator is prevented from being fully removed by the sensor hump that's cast into the valve cover. I've replaced mine but found not possible to replace the lower gasket by slipping it around the outside of the actuator as has been posted elsewhere. The actuator housing is taller than the gasket- thus preventing "stretching it over..."

But hope is not lost- I didn't have to completely remove the manifold- only needed to loosen the 6 intake manifold mounting bolts enough to permit it being raised about 1/4 inch so that the IMT actuator can clear the valve cover hump.

Prior to loosening the manifold bolts, i only removed the wiring harness fixing bolt along the back side of the manifold near the firewall. The harness is attached in two places along the back of the manifold, but freeing it from the left-most side allowed plenty of freedom.

I had planned on removing the entire manifold, but didn't need to. Working my way to the 6 manifold bolts, I'd removed the air filter housing top/MAF sensor housing in addition to the plastic engine fascia kept by 3 1/2 turn fasteners.

This was a very simple task that didn't take much longer than replacing the air filter... which also got replaced during the job.

I also got the 6 new upper intake seals with it. It was perfect match.
