Rear trailing arm bushings...that's what caused those exact symptoms for me.

Chexhire Cat, also, take a look at the rear sway bar bushings. Those are also prone to squeaks. You can quickly eliminate those by giving each bushing a squirt of WD-40. If the noise goes away, you know one of the bushings is wearing and squeaking.

You can do the same to diagnose the trailing/A-arm bushings too. The only thing that I would caution you on is only doing a select number of joints at any one time so you can eliminate the joints and know which one is being your problem child. The WD-40 trick seems to work for about 6 months, then the squeak will come back.

dont forget to check the parking brake cables as they pass through the bracket in the floor pan. The same symptoms can happen and easy to fix.

Joe, if you look under the rear of the car, you will see a big arm extending from the center of the car to the bottom of the wheel. Half way on this bar you will see the coil spring resting on it. That is the trailing arm. The other 2 arms that are there are only about 12 inches long and run from the spindle to the mounts at the edge of the wheel well.

I have the same problem. My friend at Jaguar that I bought the car from said it was the parking break cable on my car. He told me to spray a lubricant on it and it should fix the problem, since it did that when he owned it. Not sure where I need to lube it though. It doesn't squeak when it rains. Any ideas where to lube it at?

hi,
my 2001 2.5 sport was making a banshee wail from the rear with every movement of the suspension. I had it fixed by my local garage a few weeks ago. It was a problem with what they called the " rear control arms". The bushes were knackered.
The arms were replaced at a cost of £52 each plus labour.

Since however, another noise has appeared which initially sounded like a knocking noise but now sounds like a low frequency creaking sound. Perhaps this was there before but masked by the control arm squeak?
Does anyone know what the noise may be given that the control arms=trailng arms have already been replaced?

Paul
