Default Squealing - 54 plate x type 2.0d estate

Hi All,

When I start ignition I get a horrible high pitched squeal which is intermittent until I get to a steady 50mph or above when it seems to disappear. Sometimes it drops completely in lower gears too though

Is it likely to be a belt? And if so which one and will repair cost be crazy?

Excuse my lack of mechanical knowledge

Thanks in advance

You stated that you get the high pitched squeal when you start the car. Do you get it sitting idling or when you drive off. If idling it is probably a bearing in one of the rotating components driven by the serpentine belt. If that is happening then you will need to remove the belt and rotate each item by hand and check for resistance or play in the bearings.
E.G idler pulley bearing, tension-er bearing, ETC.
If it is making the noise while driving you will need to look at transfer case fluid level, carrier bearing greasing and possible transmission fluid level and change out.

Let us know a little bit more ab out when the noise occurs.

Thanks for your response it happens when idle and when driving, at first only for a minute after pulling away but more frequently now, the only time it's OK is when I'm doing a steady 50mph +

I took it to a local highly regarded Jaguar garage but the inspection was brief at best and he estimated £250, (four hours to take it apart to diagnose) then parts if needed on top. They mentioned a modified belt kit that I should consider

I took it to another garage I know and they are taking a look for me now and won't charge much for that

I'm now worried this is going to get expensive

I forgot to add, the jag "specialist" is convinced it's a belt but didn't know which one

If it is a belt squealing then it will be very shiny where it is being rubbed. Changing a belt will probably not cure it. One of the accessories or pulley bearings is causing excessive resistance to rotation.

OK thanks, so I want to ensure they do more than just replace the belt then, thanks

I'm still waiting to hear back at the moment
