Default Steering Wheel Thoughts

I've seen a few discussions on swapping out steering wheels here of late, so while I was in my son's room at the hospital over the last few days (one of us can stay with him overnight, and when he's sick he wants daddy), I did some research.

FROM x-type to X-type wheels are NO PROBLEM, at least up to the 2007 wheels. The wiring is the same, the only difference is that the 2001-2004.25 wheels have a separate on and off switch for the cruise; on the later wheel, the on/off switches are integrated into the rollers (like a thrid button wired into the scroll wheel on your mouse.

The I looked at some of the other wheels: the S-type has THE SAME wiring scheme, but has a 'square' or 'rectangular' opening for a splined mount.

I haven't had a chance to research the mounts, but since both systems are also used by Ford (and possibly BMW and Mercedes), I'm willing to wager that someone somewhere machines an adapter that would let us put the S-type and XJ wheels on our X-types.

That would also open up a world of aftermarket wheels...

Just brainstorming at the moment, nothing concrete...your thoughts?

This interests me, as the wheel on my X-Type has damaged leather, and the front horn/airbag area is warped from the heat when it was a Texas car. I am looking to replace it. Factory would be fine with me, but I am open to other options if they exist.
