Sterio sounds funny
Paul, when you say the sound is bad, in what way? Are you saying there is lots of static, lots of alternator noise, almost all highs, almost all lows, garbled like you are listening to a tape player that is messing up, etc?
Based on the fact that the volume has dropped significantly and you are having fidelity issues, odds are, the ground wire for the stereo is acting up (ie, high resistance connection). Granted, could also be a power supply issue too. Check the fuse for the stereo to be good (if in doubt, replace). If both of those are good, then you are most likely looking at a bad radio in the dash. Wish the diagnosis was better, but there are not many things in this system overall.

Paul, based on what you are saying, it sounds like the amplifier section of the radio went out. If the other systems inside the radio (nav, heater control, etc) still function properly, then that only helps to confirm a bad amplifier section. If you have the basic radio setup, then it will probably be worth your while to find a used radio on e-bay or to upgrade to a new radio. That is what it sounds like has happened. Wish the news was better, but sounds like the radio died on you.
yes thanks thermo, i thaught the amp was in the rear piller tho, ill see. the only prob with a used radio off e-bay is the theft code, i hear its a nightmare to get that. my 02 x sport that iv had since new has been really good tho, cant complain that much. ...........Paul
hi ibjags, speakers seem ok, its just the bass, treble thats all out of whack. im going to look at the ground wire if i can find it. i have the jag tech cd also so ill look it up. gives me something to do anyway!.

no but it makes no sense to me that all 4 would have gone. must be a connection, when i get time i'm going to pull the door panels off and have a look. I could'nt have blown them because i never turn it up that loud. still, i love a good mystery.
to start with the speakers themselves are not of the greatest quality
and i have seen numerous times when all 4 failed at once
or should i say the car had came in the shop and all 4 were faulty
as to exact cause im not sure?
let me know how it goes

Hi Tony, no i'm going to establish if its the speakers or a connection first, prob sunday when i get time. In my 02 the amp is in the left piller i think, normally if i poke around long enough i can fix things. I'm in south Atlanta, not close enough to you . i'll keep you informed because i know lots of others will want to know how to fix that sooner or later. Ironically, i dont listen to the radio that much, but now i dont have it i want it back!!
good luck there paul! If you ask alot of us audio guys, 99.9% will tell you that you can get aftermarket speakers that are better quality and are less expensive. If I could recommend going to a Tweeter store (don't know if you have one nearby) but the one in Houston stocked about a dozen different brands of component speakers...just listen to each one with your favorite type of music (bring your own CD, works great) and choose by ear. They'll last 10x longer too than those factory speakers.
what size are the speakers in a 02 x non premium? Also does anyone knwo where you can get the tweeter housing (in door handles) liek the ones in the premium sound for cheaper than dealer prices?
