There's a sensor (knife switch style) that tells the relay it is closed, and there's the relay itself. Could be either. FJT will have more info on that than I if he strolls by this thread soon.

I had the same issue on my 2002. The close button would just cycle through all the functions. Resetting the sunroof module did it for me. Here are the instructions compliments of FJT.

Picture sitting in the car with the sunroof closed. You push button forward to tilt the sunroof. Press and hold it this way for 20 seconds. Then release and immediately push and hold again the same way. Keep holding as the sunroof first will tilt on first push, then second push it will close, tilt, close, slide open, slide closed. At this point it is programmed. Sorry if I wasn't clear the first time around.
I hope this helps,
Bill

The same thing happened to me, as it started raining. Go figure.

I hit the close button, and just before it hit the point where it would stop and go back, i grabbed the endge and held it from going back. It stopped for a second, and the closed. It's worked fine ever since.

My 2003 X pulled this stunt just as I was heading into the automatic touchless carwash. I did the same thing by grabing it, it stopped and then closed. This happened last fall and I haven't messed with it all winter. Will take a look at it when it gets warmer to see if it's still messed up or if I need to try a reset.

Default Thanks a lot you guys

Thanks for writing a record of your successes down here, I had a similar problem with my 2003 s-type and now it works fine.

Don't have much to contribute to these forums because my problems are usually answered here, but I did successfully install new fluorescents for my backlight on my navigation ($15 for the lights or a $2500 repair from jaguar!!) so maybe I will write a how to for that...Anyways, thanks for the great forum!!

You have solved something that has made me crazy since I bought my car last year. Thank you for your advice. Just 3 tries and - - - we have a closed sun roof. Now maybe it won't whistle at speeds over 80 mph...lol!

Just an update on my sunroof problem.
When spring arrived I did the re-set on it and everything went perfect the first time. There hasn't been a problem since.

My first button for the sunroof works the second button doesnt work anymore. Do I need to check a fuse or try the trick? I can open and close it easily but I have to use the 1st button and hold it for a while.

This is one of the best threads I have come across. I literally just went to my car and got it on the first try. Brilliant!!!

This should def be a sticky! It sounds like a lot of us have this problem. My sunroof is fixed!! Thank you!

I've had this problem too. After the second try, I just hold the button till it closes all the way. I'll try the rest after the current part is repaired and the codes reset. It's always something!

There was a problem with the early motors being too sensitive with the anti-trap power sensor. It is a safety feature so you won't be injured if a body part is trapped in the sliding roof as it is closing. Here is the old TSB.

Default Same problem with my 1999 VDP and reset did not work....now what?

do I need to try the hard reset for my 1999 VDP? I tried the module reset and it did not work after several tries. I do hear a very subtle clicking sound while holding down the forward button for 20 seconds...
