Default tech help needed..........please!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

had my brake pad on the passenger side go and eat a rotor. while lookin at this i noticed some grease on the wheel and fender. i'm thinkin that it is from the cv joint(it was snowin to beat hell when i noticed it and now it is dumpin freezing rain) and haven't been able to get under and look for sure. here's the million half peso question. can the boot be replaced. i was just told that the whole axle has to be done. so if i could get an opinion from a tech that would be great.

Front or rear? There may be a split type boot that you can put on. The only problem is
is the origianl boot was torn, there will probably be dirt in the CV joint now. This will
eventully damage the CV joint. If it is a rear boot you can replace just the outer CV
joint ($175) as opposed to the whole axle. ($800++) I do not know what a front
axle goes for. Also, I am not Tech, but have done a rear outer CV jout.
