Default Tranny slipping

I was traveling around 40 mph and punched the accelerator, really not too hard to assist in changing lanes and the engine went faster but the car did not!
It did recover and keep on driving just fine afterwards, it would seem to be something to do with the clutch but since auto trannys are a bit of a mystery to me, what are the most likely causes?

I am trying to educate myself before I take it for repair, also should I go with the dealer (it is due for a service anyway) or a tranny shop?

I have had a customer with a similar concern and an adaption reset fixed the problem. I mean, you should always try the simpler cheaper way first:

1_ do an adaption reset. It takes me 5 minutes because I have the scan tool but you could just disconnect the battery overnight. Then the computers will relearn you driving habits, and hopefully fix your problem.

2_Transmission service. Sometimes your problem is that your tranny is low on fluid. you could top it up or just do a transmission service and also get the tranny filter changed.

I recomend this fluid: Red Line D4 ATF Automatic transmission fluid 1 quart, SouthOils.com

3_Then is time to take it to the shop.

Best of luck!

Hi, a couple of questions for you:

- Did you get any error messages like "gearbox fault" or an amber warning light on the dash?
- Did it feel like the car was in neutral, rather than in a gear when you tried to accelerate?

I had this problem a couple of years ago. When I had the codes read, it came back as "P0734 - 4th gear out of range." Essentially a dodgy solenoid caused a clutch pack to burn out. Unfortunately the repair was somewhat expensive (A$3,865)!

I'd also get the codes read (perhaps as my first action) if I were you.

Regards

Rob
