Default Transfer case "air scoop"

Can anyone tell me where the transfer case air scoop to keep it cool should be ?. I had my transmission replaced in Feb last year and want to make sure that it's been put back. Anyone got any diagrams or pictures ? . Also without it how long will the rebuilt trans with new fluid last ?

you can't miss it if you look under the car.
It should be towards the back of the trans, directing airflow up to the t-case.
I can't give you anything quantifiable on the number of miles you can expect to lose off the back end for not having one... but the general consensus is: Fewer than if you DID have it.

Hope that helps.
I'm sure Bo will pick apart my response for lack of scientific evidence, or data to support the supposition.

No problem with what you said McJag..It is actually fitted with one 10MM bolt on one side and is held in position with a plastic peg on the other side of it..it basically covers the Oil pan drain plug, so it must be removed each time you change the oil...As I understand it's purpose, is to ram air over and around the transfer case (TC)to help keep it cool, in spite of the large finned heat sink on the TC, I guess that isn't enough (the exhaust catalytic converter is right next to it)..I also suspect winter is not an issue too much, as would be the hot summer months..I didn't even know about it for quite some time until all the in depth discussions here about TC failures and lube oil changes, etc....here is a fewpictures of it;

If you can drain your engine oil without removing anything, your air scoop is missing.

Yikes! Did the parts guy have a slight grin on his face when he quoted that price?

Maybe I should bend up a spare out of a scrap of aluminum sheet while I still have one to copy.

Yeah - I took mine off to change the oil and there is a hex nut on one side and on the other there's this flimsy plastic pin that slides into a socket - that thing does not stand a chance in deep snow.

Does anyone know where I can get one of these online? If I have to go to the dealer and get one I will be the most bummed. $75 is not something I want to spend on a part that's such easily ripped off however I just don't know how I feel about my TC without it.

Just where does the duct fasten? The diagram in the JTIS doesn't indicate the mounting points.
When I look at my car I don't see any indication that a duct was ever there. You'd think that a piece where it was bolted would still be there, but I can't find anything.

Look again... for a 10MM bolt on the left side (looking to the rear)abovethe oil pan drain plug area..you should see a black piece of ripped off plastic still under the bolt..

Huh, it is looking like I am also going to end up getting one of these. When I changed my oil, I didn't have to remove anything. So, off spending some money I go.

Thanks Dennis, I'll look again when we get another warm day. I was under the car yesterday when the temp was in the 40's to see where coolant is seeping from my radiator drain that I made, I'm going to have to makea change in that this spring. It's too cold to do anything now because we're back below freezing again and will be for awhile. The coolant seeping isn't that bad and can wait til spring.
I think I will try to fabricate a cooling duct for the tranfer case out of metal, those posted pictures give some good detail of what it looks like.

Just curious. Is this scoop really necessary. Had my X-Type in for the 3 Year service two weeks ago, even though it had only 17,000 klics on the odometer. No mention of the missing scoop. A colleague, a Jaguar "techie", told me not to worry about it. Seems to be all sorts of opinions via various forums on this subject. Could a true Jag expert on the list provide a definitive answer?

Cheers,

Bruce

In the winter, I don't think it matters..but in the summer is when it will serve to keep the TC cool..I too think mine was missing for a long time and my dealer said they don't worry about it...Frankly I don't think somedealer techseven know the importance of the scoop, especially in the summer..the lube oil I pulled out of mine was on the verge of being burnt..
