Transfer case

Transfer case
Hi all. Brand new to this wonderful forum. Wish i had found you before i bought my Jag. Purchased last year for 4500. Dealer had replaced transfer case. Had 133,000 miles on it. It lasted me 3,000 miles 4 months when the transfer case went crap. Had it in at a very reputable local transmission shop. Was looking at over $3,000 fixed done right. So now it has sat in my lawn since last August. No transfer case in it. Retired & just can't afford an expensive fix. Used car dealer took advantage on me & i let him know when i found out he bought a used one installed for $750. Anyway!!! I have an 04 Xtype 3.0 Automatic & need a transfer case. I am getting conflicting info on years that are compatible. I can find 02-03 for 1/2 the price of the 04-08. I understand they are a bit different in the feel of the AWD. Boy do I need advise..

That's a bummer!
When you say it has no transfer case, do you mean that they took it out and didn't replace it, or do you mean that it just has a broken TC in there?
I bought my X-Type because it had a bad TC (and thus was a bargain), and repaired it myself, which was not too difficult of a job at all, although I took some shortcuts.
The chances are that some bearings went bad. They can be replaced without removing the whole TC.
Good luck.

Thanx for the reply Jaggedy. The transfer case was taken out. Not sure that they still have it. The car sat at the transmission shop for over 3 mns as Wally tried to locate replacement parts. No success. Totally torn up inside. The 1/2 axle sprockets were broke off. ???? Very black hardened junk inside it. I am trying to find out if anyone has put an 02-03 in an 04 Jag. & what extra instructions would be advisable. Have a soninlaw that is into mechanics & could replace it.

The transfer boxes of all years are interchangeable. The pre MY2004 ones have a viscous coupling incorporated that makes the differential action of the box 'closed' or limited slip, whereas the later boxes, without the viscous coupling, are 'open' differentials.
Under normal driving conditions, there is no difference in their performance or effect on the handling - 40% drive to the front, 60% to the rear.
In icy conditions, without the VC, one spinning wheel at the front or rear removes the drive to the other three wheels. If it's a rear wheel, using the handbrake can lock the rear end and restore drive to the front. If you have DSC, that should take care of it all!
With a VC locking the transfer box, drive to both axles is maintained, but a spinning wheel at both ends will stop further progress unless DSC is fitted.
Some say that the non VC boxes are stronger, but I've never seen any hard evidence to support that view. However, it would seem that the pre-load on the bearings was amended at some point and that was to improve bearing life.
When transfer boxes fail they tend to make the headlines and thus they have a bad reputation, but remember that there are many more X Types out there with no transfer box problems than those with them!

Okay. Between your son-in-law and Astromorg's explanation, I think you have a solution to get it back out on the road!
When you buy one, there is something to be careful of which I can't quite recall right now. If they were not careful removing it, they may have torn an oil seal with some clip. Or something like that.
Someone can chime in on that. Also make sure that the bearings are smooth.
