Hey Sean, if you don't know its not a dumb question and certainly not dumb to be asking, thats for sure

Good idea to be keeping on top of these fluids for sure sean if you want your kitty to have a long n happy life.

In fact the dealers probably won't do it and will say " sealed for life"....There is plenty of good advice available here on how to do it yourself, or info for a mechanic you trust.
Please check out the X Type quick FAQ links for more info.

Good luck

Sean, as for a recommended time to go between changes, you will find a large variance in this time. There's a few that say "filled for life, don't ever touch". Others will say every 50K miles, some 30K miles, some go as low as 10K miles. Really, I think it is more a matter of how you drive and if you have any leakage coming from the transfer case. The harder you drive and/or the more leakage you have, the more often you should be looking at the transfer case fluid.

As for a dealership doing it, that is hit and miss. Some dealerships will do it, but will charge an arm and leg. Others have figured out how to do it cheaply and don't hit you up for all that much (around $90). Then there are some dealerships that won't do it because it is "filled for life, doesn't need to be done". Not sure what the attitude of your local dealership is on this subject. All you can do is ask.

I personally am changing my differential fluid every 30K miles. The fluid is fairly cheap and with the valve installed, it is a quick thing to do now. Takes me about 30 minutes to do.
