Default transfer case flush

I just did a flush and fill on my 2.5 sport. I followed the thread that was on the site and the sport (at least mine)has a different style of case or they changed styles mid year or something cause there is NO room to put a valve in that space.I had less than 2" to fit the fittings into The pictures on the site showed a threaded 1/2' fitting soldered to a ball valve screwed into the case.NO way can I get the smallest valve made with any fitting into that space, I couldn't barely get barbed fitting with a clear 1/2 thin tubing in there and the hose was still kinked. SO I forced a hose over a nipple and clamped it, ran the hose up by the intake put in 80/90 gear lube ran it for 30 miles then drained it screwed in a 3/8 flare fitting into a 1/2" to 3/8" fitting (called a bushing) removed the Ferrel and nut forced a hose over the threads filled it with Royal Purple 75/140 with friction modifiers pulled of the hose off put my finger over the hole then quickly capped it off with a solid brass cap.(ps)original drain was ABOUT a cup, dark but no chunks and some debre on the magnet. Not bad for 150,000 miles.Next I need to fix a CEL for O2 bank 1 out of speck.

Now finding the time to do it.

The way I did mine requires no special valves or paraphernalia.

1. Place catch pan under T case

2. Remove drain plug

3. Jack up the right side of the car to 20 inches at the door sill.

4. Allow drain time.

5. Let down the right side.

6. Move jack to the left side.

7. Jack the left side up to 20 inches at the door sill.

8. Fill through the drain / fill hole until it begins oozing out.

9. Replace drain plug.

10. Let car back down. Job done.

I have no idea who decided that 20 inches was the optimum number.
It just looks right when you look at the t case while one side is up in the air.
Tilt one way to drain and the other way to fill. Simple enough.

My 03 had an Automatic Transmission and It was a beotch to barely get the drain plug out, let alone stick a fancy valve in place, Don't know why there were differences, maybe the manual Trannies are different and gave you more room...So do as Bud Tender just said..it works perfect every time...

BTW..Do it again after about a 1000 miles..this will give it a good flush out.

I recently sent a thread about how I flushed my trans. case and went about it the hard way, lesson learned. I did find a easy way to remove the plug. I took a short 5/8 or metric equivalent bolt, ground off the threads to a 3/8" square, used a box end wrench on the bolt to pop it out.

Bud, do you actually measure how much fluid you're able to get into the case when the car is jacked up 20 inches? Can you get a full 550 ml in there without it overflowing? Also, is it just me, or does anyone think raising 1 corner of the car 20 inches is insanely high? Do the other three wheels stay on the ground when you do this?

Matt at that point I put in about 600ml..I seem to recall it started coming out just as I added about all that amount...Don't worry about it..these transfer cases for the most part have been running almost empty on a lot of the X's and people never realize it..Some have a vent an the excess may oooz out..mine never did

You don't raise one corner, you raise an entire side, Place the jack about mid car.

Have to say, that's not inspiring a lot of confidence, Bud. :-) Is there a jack point in the middle of the car? If not, what do you use as your lifting point? Do you use jackstands, or is the car only held up by a hydraulic jack while you're underneath filling it?

Man, there's got to be a better way...

A floor jack and a short piece of two by four to spread the weight.
I managed to find a sweet spot, Just look for something solid to jack on.

Build a better mousetrap ( drain and fill method ) and they will come.

Thanks for explaining how you did it, Bud. Wow, that's insane...no way you could get me under a car that's jacked up 20" on two wheels, held up only by a hydraulic floor jack on a non-standard lifting point. That has "future Darwin Award winner" written all over it.

That 20 inches is to the door sill, not to the bottom of the tire or anything that drastic. It doesn't put the vehicle on all that much a tilt. If you feel better, get it up in the air with the jack and put jack stands at the traditional jacking points to make sure it stays in place.

To chime in here, Bud is right. Per JTIS the car should be jacked up 20 inches from door sill. You do not want to do this with just a jack. You need jack stands and I even put center blocks under the tires just to be safe.

As far as the plug, I also have the tight space and had to use a 1/4 to 3/8 adapter on a socket wrench.

Another thing to keep in mind when you drain the transfer box 250 mls is left in the box. So If you put the full 550 mls back in you have a good chance to overfill it and cause whipping. The consensus is to add 300-350 mls back in after draining.

All of this is covered below. Theres also photos of what 20 inches looks like.

Yaguareté,

Thanks for the link to the other thread. The photos and scan of the Jaguar service instructions were super helpful. I think it's given me an idea that might be safer for raising one side of the car. I'll let you guys know if it works.

I will be doing a transfer case flush/fill next weekend along with a transmission flush/fill, coolant flush/fill, and an oil change on the x. This thread, along with many others, has been extremely helpful! I love this site!!
