Unhappy transfer case gearbox ?? grinding

Hi everyone
Being tested again by the car
having sorted my wiring etc i have got a terrible grinding noise from the car
once setting off it rattles like mad then gradually gets better but not gone away altogether
i have changed the transfer box and its the same still.
I thaught maybe it could be a rod in the gearbox that stops the gears when parked (its an auto) not disengaging properly.
Before i take the gearbox out (frightened to do this a bit above my level) does anyone think it could be anything else
Help

check your wheel bearing or your propshaft bearing

Is it a gear on gear noise, a very dirty bearing noise, and does it change pitch when you accelerate? Basically does it sound like there is something already broken or something about to break. If it sounds like it is about to break, it's probably a bearing. Also, if it happens on a cold day it is most definitely a bearing

I had the same noise coming from mine last weekend. Originally thought it was the wheel bearings. It was so bad I couldn't drive so I had it towed it to the dealer I bought it from and they found it was the transfer case was bad. They found a used one from a car with low miles on it replaced it and replaced the gear oil in it. I also Had them change the ATF while they were under there. Needless to say it drives much better and am happy with the job. total cost about 850.00.

Mine has started doing the same thing. But only for the first drive of the day.
Albackuk..when u start the car in the morning, is the sound there while still in park...or does it only start a few seconds after putting it in drive or reverse?...does it get quieter when you move from drive back into park?....these are my symptoms.....does not sound good or cheap to fix :+(
Sound resembles a loose exhaust heat shield

I discovered that my noise was being caused by a bad lower motor mount. The engine was moving so much it was causing the heat shields to rattle when put into gear. New motor mount fixed the problem...no more rattling...your symptom sounds exactly like mine did
