transfer case question?
Im sure that this question has been answered about a million times but here goes-
I am a new first time owner of an x-type and I hear a ton of problems with the transfer case.Is there any way to check the level or do I have to drain and refill. If I can check it how do I get to it.The car has 69k on it and seems to run great but I want to make sure that this is not a problem for me.I hope that this car does not require as much work as my Porsche 914 LOL.

RE: transfer case question?
mascari, there is no way to check the fluid level in the transfer case without dropping the transfer case out of the car (more work than it is worth). If you look, there are a few different valve ideas posted here to make changing the fluid easier. Once you install one of these valves, then checking the fluid level is a matter of installing a clear tube on the end of the valve and letting the fluid establish a level inside the tube after the valve is opened.
Wish the answer was easier, but it isn't. Of note, the transfer case is a "sealed for life" unit. So, in theory, you never have to change the fluid. If that sounds funny to you, good. We don't trust it and where you are is a good time to change out the fluid anyways. Making one of these valve setups will probably run you about $20. A quart of 75W-140 full synthetic gear lube will run you another $18 or so.
If you need any help, just hollar. I have played with the ball valve setup and also the radiator drain setup.
