Default Transfercase drip

02 x-type
Had a small drip from the transfercase. The mechanics said this was due to a worn seal. Had all the seals replaced... The drip is still there. What the heck?

Where is it dripping from? It could be coming from the transfer case vent due to the fact that 02-03 xtypes had a transfer case vent due to the extra heat of the viscous coupling. I've had mine drip a couple times from the vent, but it shouldn't be excessive unless you have just had the fluid in the case changed which you should have performed at least once every 60k miles.

If you can let us know where the drip is coming from, we will be able to help you a lot easier. It could also be coming from the engine and just dripping down the side of the transfer case.

ok, I found this post and it was exactly my problem. It was overfilled and was dripping from the vent onto the output shaft seal. Mechanics and I thought it was the seal but in actuallity it was just overfilled. From what I understand is that the transfer case takes .55 liters of full synthetic 75W-140 gear lube. When the transfer case is drained from the drain plug it still leaves .25 liters in the case (it needs to be suctioned out to completly remove it all). So if the mechanic doesn't know this and just drains from the plug then adds the full .55 liters back in, it will little by little push the excess gear lube out of the vent. It will fall onto the output shaft seal and it will appear that the problem is a bad seal.

Yep! Glad that it was just the vent and not the seal! You will probably get some oil burning smell for a little bit too just because the exhaust is very close and drips fall right onto it. Whenever I fill my case, I always get fluid out of the vent and many others also have the same problem. Just count yourself lucky because at least you know your case has fluid in it. Many people out there are driving with a dry case and are just going to kill it in the long run.
