Default Transmission problem help

Ok, guys please tell me what to expect without a serious attack. My wife has a 2004 X-Type with 110,000 on it. It's a gorgeous black sedan that's super clean and is her little baby. Well the other day it started making some kind of a grinding noise (she says), I drove the car up on the highway and around town and it seemed fine to me. It up-shifted great, downshifted fine and was quiet and steady at a light.

Well this morning my mechanic picked it up to check it out and he didn't even get back to his shop and had to coast into a supermarket parking lot, after it acted like it was in neutral . He said it was making a a little noise like my wife said and no matter what gear he put it in it was neutral. Even in Park the car rolled like it was in neutral, There was no Park and we had to use the emergency brake to hold it.

I'm afraid to even think of the diagnosis and cost. Maybe it could be as simple as the shift linkage coming off. I'm waiting to hear something but any thoughts from you guys would be appreciated. Thanks for any input.-Russ

I think your going to find that your transfer case gave out. Pretty common problem, used ones are reasonably cheap but it's going to take a full day to change out as it's a pretty involved job.

Good luck and let us know how you get on.
