Transmission Question

RE: Transmission Question
Hello Grim,
I definitely feel for you and I really hope the best for you. I do love my jag but that weak Tranny is always on the back of my mind.
I have a 2002 X-type 2.5 liter with 80,000 miles on it (auto trans), the dealer replaced the Tranny at around 45,000 miles. Did this tranny replacement from the Dealer fix the whatever is wrong with the original transmissions? or should Ifeel rest assured?
Sorry I don't mean to hijack your post but please do keep us updated!

RE: Transmission Question
In response to the last post. Jaguar did have a tranny recall for some 02 models, and recall took care of the manufactoring problem that year had. But we all still have to worry about that SEAL FOR LIFE fluid. My 02 is close to 80K and hadit replaced also, and doesnt give me trany trouble, except for a tiny jerk when shifting to 2nd gear.I dont know if this is anything to worry about though.
After reading this post, i really really think twice before doing a fluid change, which i was planning to do itvery soon. What a nightmare! Feel for you Grim001! I wonder if there any legal action can be taken against AAMCO?

RE: Transmission Question
Well this is what I plan on doing so far. Suggestions always apprieciated. AAMCO said they would take the pan off for me for free and see if they can see a problem with the tranny. I am also looking online for a used one. The dealer quoted me $4700, which is out of the question. I am mechanically incline so if AAMCO comes back and gives me a similar quote to the dealer I think I will get a used tranny and put it in myself. Anyone got history with a tranny swap? I am also trying to find out if a newer tranny from say an 04 wouldbypass the weak tranny problem and if they will match up. Anyone know what year they fixed the weak tranny for the x type? Or did they? Third option is to get rid of it but I like my car so I 'll work hard at the first two options.

the AAMCo guy did pull a P1111 code on the car, any ideas what this could be. He said it was the fuel and air mixture settings!! I guess jag will tell me tomorrow.

P1111 isnt a fault code.If its flagged after the DTCs have been cleared, all engine management OBD diagnostic monitor drive cycles HAVE BEEN COMPLETED.

Well the dealer gave me the bad news today. the fluid was full so it must be a failing tranny. He pulled the code from the computer and I think it was P704, or it may have been P740, basically saying it is either a mechanical falure, a valve in the tranny failing, or low oil. Now I have to figure out if i want to have it fixed. I have heard it is close to 5k for a rebuilt one...whew.

P0740 relates to a TCC malfunction caused by either:-
1)an incorrect setting on the J Gate or
2)Transmission oil level low
3)Transmission failure
Hopefully its number 2.
Good luck

RE: Transmission Question
This is from another forum. I trust the source but cannot vouch for this information personally. Having said that, here is what someone else did with a similar problem.
"it was
revving to 4000 RPM when she was going about 30 MPH. I drove the
car and found that it would shift gently into 4th gear and then
slip if you gave it any power. After a few weeks researching this
and a $8000 quote to fix (over the phone) from the Jaguar dealer. I
found that there is a common failure of a piston that cracks and I
was fairly sure this was my problem....To make a long story short,
I fixed the car in about 4 hours without removing the transmission
from the car. If anyone has a similar problem and would like to
know the steps to fix it, plese post a reply and I will respond."
...there's a cover on the left end of the transmission that
can be removed while the transmission is in the car. I had to
remove the battery and the brackets that hold the battery (this was
mostly to make things easier, probably not really necessary), the
lower plastic cover under the front bumper (not hard, just about 25
screws). I removed the left front tire and took the two front bolts
out of the sub-frame that holds the suspension, steering, etc out.
This let it drop a couple of inches down. Then jacked up the motor
for support and removed the large bolt on the left motor/trans
mount near the left shock tower and the round upper bar going to
the motor from here - two 13mm bolts. Then I lowered the engine
just an inch or two and this allowed me to get right at the cover
behind the left wheel well. It has about 13 or so 12mm bolts and
two 14mm ones with o-rings. The whole cover is under spring
pressure for a way so I removed the bolts evenly to keep it all
strait. Once, you remove this cover, the drum housing the faulty
cylinder is right there, just pull it off. It contains the reverse
clutches and the direct clutches. Remove the two rings that hold
the clutches in and take them out. You have to depress the center
cylinder and remove a retainer ring to get the pistons out. The
large aluminum drum is the one that cracks and it's almost
impossible to see - very very small crack. Depending on how much
the car was driven you may have to replace all the clutches in the
reverse stack - since the piston won't allow any pressure on the
direct clutches I'd be surprised if they would need to be replaced.
Assembly was easy and it all went together easily, you just use
silicone (very sparingly) for the gasket as was original. Then
Refill and check the fluid - which is a little tricky but not that
hard. I used the Castrol Import Multi Vehicle transmission fluid -
$3.99 / quart and used about 8.5. This meets the Shell spec. for
this transmission, I've heard the fluid $40 / quart from the
dealer - ouch! It' really not bad if you go slow and keep
everything as clean as you can. I purchased the JATCO JF506E
rebuild manual from ATRA (I think it was $25, but didn't really use
it except for reference/pictures) and I have the Jaguar JTIS which
helped too but the pictures are vague. I hope this helps someone
out, I really love this car and there doesn't seem to be too many
problems in the 2002's but was a little worried how much this would
cost to fix - total $210 including fluid - I also replaced the
thrust washer that is between the cover that you remove and the
drum, it was a little worn looking. Good luck. I may sit down and
write step-by-step with pictures and details in the future."

RE: Transmission Question
WOW, an interesting article you put out there. I may have to give it a try. Any word on how his tranny is doing now and if the oil held up? I wonder where he got the parts from?
I also wonder if they have upgrade that aluminum drum if it is a main cause of tranny failures?

One thing I would like to add. I talked to the dealer about the oil AAMCO said they put in my car and he said it couldn't have been the original stuff for the price I paid but, here is the interesting part, he brought out a bottle of tranny fluid with the brand "WYNN" and said they have started using this stuff and it is an approved replacement for the original fluid used in my car. He said this is probably what he put in because it matched to the price I paid. I paid about $20 a liter/quart from AAMCO. Anyone heard of this brand and where to get some? It might be interesting to some of you DITY guys on the forum.
Just goes to show even the dealer uses multi vehicle Fluid. I don’t think your problem was caused by the fluid change.
