4x4x4, odds are, you are looking at a bad lower/forward control arm. These are known to cause what you are seeing. I would thing that if the upper arm was bad, you would also be complaining about the top of the tire leaning in.

A check that you can try is find yourself a wide, sweeping turn to the left (highway on ramp possibly). Take the turn at say 40 km/h and in the middle of the turn, give the car a little bit of gas (maintaining control at all times). Did it feel like the back end of the car was going to step out on you? If so, then this confirms the bad forward/lower control arm has too much play in it and needs to be replaced.

FWIW, it COULD be something as simple as alignment...

When I bought my '03, it had older tires on all four corners. The left rear had extensive wear on the inside (much like you describe). Within the week of replacing all four tires, I had an all-wheel alignment done by the same place I had install new shocks (which were also the original factory equipment).

Since that time, I have probably put 17K miles on the car and do not see the signs of wear on any corner. I had no way of knowing whether the wear had come from the back corner or if it was a front issue where the tire just got moved in a rotation. But in any event, the abnormal wear issue was resolved...

Just had both my "rear control arms" replaced yesterday. Bought all new tires in Sept. '14 and only had 4000 miles on them when the 2 back tires wore down to the metal cords and blew out. My recommendation is...stand behind the car and view the rear tires. If they are not standing straight up and down (meaning bowed out at ground level) then that's your problem. Cost was $509.29 installed. Good Luck!
