Used AC compressor
with a used you might be inheriting someone else's problem. The price you threw out seems a little high, was it for new or rebuilt?
IF you go used, look into the update. our compressors were a variable run for lack of better terms at 10:30 at night. basically you pull one of the valves out and flip it around. i did that on mine and replaced the few o-rings where the hoses connect to the compressor, and even though i did have a leak around the shaft, it hasn.t been an issue needing a refill in the year since i did it.
Good luck either way

Did the installation of the new compressor include a new drier? I think this is usually required for the compressor warranty?
FWIW - if a significant part of the cost is labor, I usually go for the best parts to avoid a re-do. Used or new? Depends on budget and how long you want to keep the car.
Good luck. HTH, Dave
