I am planning to replace the AJ6 AC compressor on my Lumped Series 3. Yesterday, I started the car and even though the AC system is blowing cold, I heard this annoying sound (like an old sewing machine) in the engine bay. The sound is coming from the AC compressor. Rather than get a replacement under the lifetime warranty for the AJ6 compressor, I would like to replace it with a more modern, lighter AC compressor.
To all lumpers, which compressor do you all recommend.
I am using the V-belt system and want to maintain the existing location of the AC compressor.
Any suggestions on replacement units, brackets etc?
Can I get an AC compressor to install without having to do major fabrication of new brackets?

 

there is a redesigned Harrison compressor now sold by Rock Auto. Lighter weight and suppsedly more efficient, works with R12 or R134a.

RetroAir.com also sold it in chromed but looks like they are out of business.

I use the newer style Sanden with a serpentine belt and have had good results for many years with R134..

 

I just converted my AC system on my Jaguar XJ6 1990 from R12 to R134A replaced the compressor mine was the SD709 bought one from eBay for $206 replaced the dryer
used 5.5OZ of EASTER oil charged 1150 grams of R134A its cooling good but when I push the gas pedal I hear the same noise your are talking about
I will lived with it bat looking for a place to rebut my old compressor

 

I replaced mine with a Sanden. I paid around $200 for the compressor and $100 for the new bracket. You will also need to change the ends of the hoses if you convert. The Four Seasons A6 replacement runs around $350, so it's pretty much a wash.

I like the Sanden because it takes up a lot less space. Here's a before and after:

Vintage Air via Jegs.com. The bracket was cheaper at Jegs, but the compressor was cheaper at Summit.

 

I've used this Alu A6, it was a bolt in and blew cold on a series 3 using 134a with an unmodified expansion valve.

I didn't replace the Expansion valve the OEM instruction didn't ask for it, I used the same size AC compressor so I used the old brackets used EASTER oil because it works with R12 and 134A
and you never can get the old mineral oil out of the system its cooling good just some chirping sound from the compressor will have to live with it
