warm up?
hi all
my 2.5 x type sport seems to take about 15 mins or 2.5 miles driving to warm up, its about 20c here at the moment,
should warm up quicker than that or is this normal?
the temp gauge comes up to the middle and stays there, but the heating seem only luke warm.
could i be looking at a new themostat to resolve this?
many thanks

rust, I agree with disguay. The warm up time for the needle on the dash to reach the mid point is about right. As for the heater not pumping out tons of hot air, that is a blend door issue or the tubing to the heater core is blocked and you need to either clear the blockage or replace the heater core. You can check for proper flow by getting the car up to temp and then feeling the two hoses. With the heating system off, if one is nice and hot and the other is only luke warm, then your have a blockage in the system. If both are hot (ie, can't touch the hose very long), then you have tons of flow and your problem lies with the blend door. The more difficult way is to pull off both hoses and then try blowing some compressed air through the heater core. If you get minimal air flow, heater core is blocked. If you can get a nice flow of air, then it points to the blend door.
I have uses a little bit of water and some compressed air to "hammer" out the blockage. For people that work around mechanical system and are used to the term "water hammer", I am just putting it to good use. In short, I am propelling a slug of water down a pipe and allowing it to hit (hammer) against the blockage. In a lot of cases, a few good hits like this is enough to free a lot of blockages. It doesn't take much water, but you do want to make sure you can get the water moving rather quickly in the tubing to give it a nice strong hammering.

i like the heater blend door fault better than a clogged-up heater matrix!
so this heater blend door thing, im i looking for a servo motor somewhere behind the dashboard or would it in the centre console/footwell?
the coolant seems clean(new/red in colour) and the header tank looks scale free so im going to rule out scaled-up heater core for now,
but i do have a low buzzing sound from the right side of the dashboard; could this be the jammed heater blend door servo?
my old bwm e46 would do a power on self test of the heater flaps, would my x type do the same?
cheers lads

The X Type routine to reset the flaps is as follows:
Manual Reset
• Select full cooling -Lo
• Select full heating - Hi
• Back to full cooling - Lo
• Select Face followed by Floor
• Then select Face again
• Finally select Defrost
This routine also occurs automatically two minutes after after every 85th ignition switch-off.
