Default Weird squeal

I have 2006 X Type 2.2Ds premiun pack. There is an intermittent ( it is becoming more frequent) squealing noise coming from front right wheel. It only occurs when I turn to the left whilct driving. It stops when I brake. As soon as I brake it ceases until I turn left again.

It is quite a loud squealing/high pitch whine. But as mentioned intermittent and can occur at any speed when turning left. All help experience greatly appreciated.

Check your brakes on both sides, and power steering reservoir to make sure it is full. Shake both front wheels violently from the top, to see if there is excessive play in the wheel bearing. If any of these, except the power steering fluid, (Then just fill it up) are the case, don't drive the car, until the problem is fixed.....Mike

Paddyt, I would start with the wheel bearings. It may be that you have a wheel bearing with some play in it and that is causing the caliper to be shifted some, leading to the squeal (due to the brake pad remaining up against the rotor). The other possibility is the guide pins on one of the front calipers is dry (ie, old grease) and it is not able to slide like it should and therefore not allow the caliper to re-center like it should. If this is the case, you may be able to remove the front wheels and look at the pads. If this has been going on for some time, you may see where 3 of the pads are going to be 1 thickness and 1 of the pads will be much thinner. The caliper with the thin pad is the one that is your issue. To fix this, you simply pull out the guide pins one at a time, wipe off the old grease, stick it back in to grab more of the old grease, wipe that off, then put on a liberal amount of new high temp brake grease, and re-install the guide pin. Repeat for the other 3 bolts (might as well do both sides as the other side probably isn't too far behind).

Default thanks

all wheels have been checked and no wheel bearing problem, the noise is quite high pitched and the mechanic who had a very quick look and check the bearings said it was not a bearing he put the car on a ramp and shook the wheels as suggested.

I left the garage as I could not replicate the problem, naturally 2 miles up the road it started again and got much worse yesterday. I will get them to check guide pins and power sterring res. Thank you. Just had a dmf replaced and clutch so hoping its not another expensive wee job!

There is a chance that the shield that covers the inside face of the brake disc is actually making very slight contact with the disc under certain conditions. I had exactly the same problem on another car that I owned and the above was the cause.
