Default weirdly behaving trunk button

Hi: I just bought a 02 x-type and the first day I could open the trunk by pushing the little green kitty face on the lid. Now I can only open it with the remote. Did I accidentally get into some safe mode? I have a manual on order but it is not here yet. Thank you for helping. --Tom in Tucson

Make sure all doors are unlocked, otherwise trunkbutton is deactivated.
If it still won't open with the button, but will open withe the keyfob, you most likely have some broken wiring to the switch.

Answering yourself is a sign of insanity but today I changed the "global"-ness of my locking configuration and my green kitty face button now will open the trunk.
BUT only for one cycle of operation it seems. When I got home and tested to see if it were still working, it was not after a trip to supper where I shut the car off and locked and unlocked it and drove it home. Has anyone else experienced these cycles or reversions back to previous states?
