I have a 2002 Jaguar 3.0 automatic with 121,000 miles. I have done all the factory service completed. After going through all the previous threads I was curious the typical milage the transmission and TC case will fail. The massive oil pan repair done when my dad owned the car. I just want to make sure that if the TC case or tranny fail typically fail soon, that I sell it. If it is ready to go, what symptoms will the TC case or transmission exhibit. I love the car and hope to drive it to about 140,000-150,000. Is this mileage typical, or very rare?

Newbie, the transmissions are pretty good. So, as long as you keep them properly maintained, they will outlast the motor. As for the transfer case, how do you drive? I don't mean to make it sound like a smart @$$ question, but from listening to people here, those that like to drive the car like a sports car, they are replacing the transfer case say every 30K miles. If you drive the car sensibly, it will last the life of the car. So, how do you drive? Keep up on the TC fluid changes and you should be golden. There is no "golden goose egg" that you can do to the transfer case to make them last longer other than being easy on them. It is a manufacturing issue with the transfer case.

 

ha ha I just wanted to know if other people had high mileage vehicles, at what mileage those failures occured. My dealer told me typically they fail around 120,000, but with proper service, they may make it quite a bit longer. i hope to push it to 150,000, but I was just wanting generalizations.

 

You are already well past the point when my TC and tranny both went out. TC early on, tranny around 80k mi, regardless of the maintenance I did.

 

I don't drive hard at all. I will rarely ever accelerate to the point that the car exceeds 2.5-3 RPM's. I never push the car hard, and only made the engine roar on one occasion to avoid a woman who ran a red light (That was 2 years ago ha ha). I drive the speed limit and like I said have pushed it over 3 RPM's only one time I can remember. Like I said, I am as easy on it as possible. I commute to school and put about 10K a year on it, but it is a daily driver and does sit outside.

 

^^^ i hope you change the oil at 3k since low rpm/speed and short commutes sludge up an engine faster than prolonged oil changes with higher mileage.

 

I have a local mechanic who works on only europian cars, he told me the transmissions are almost bullet-proof, he also said something that is completely different than what everyone here says which was that if you've gott 100K on your transmission without having done anything to the fluid his advise was to leave it alone. he said he see far more transmission issues after people change the fluid than the people who left it 'sealed for life'.

The transfer case is another matter. He said the biggest issue is people run them dry, they almost always leak at some point and they are prone to breakage if you drive it like it's a 5 liter Mustang.

 

My dealer told me every 10K the oil needed to be changed, but I have it changed ever 5-6K. Should I do the oil more often?
sidewalkman- I drive it really easy. Should I have my dealer do a TC flush? I hear about more TC failures then transmission issues, so I am most concerned about the TC case failing because of high mileage (maybe i'm concerned about nothing). I remember a few years ago we had the massive oil pan repair that was over 2,000 dollars. I also had a bearing go bad last winter, which i replaced immediately at the dealer with the factory parts.

 

I'd suggest you flush and fill both the TC and Tranny.

If Brutal suggest you bump up the oil change frequency, I'd listen to him.

The adage of not changing tranny fluid if it gets to a certain point/age is not really accurate this day and age, something of a myth although it is widely believed. I won't go into all the reasoning here, there is plenty on the interwebs on this one.

My 02 Tranny was most definitely not bullet-proof, or right foot proof. Not trying to insult you Sidewalkman, just stating my experience.
