Default What Part is this?

Hey all, I have an air leak coming from the gasket between the black plastic and intake. (arrow in picture) I can hear air rushing and, putting my finger on it, I can feel the air. What do I need to buy to fix this? Just a gasket? Which part? and If i'm fixing that, are there any other problems common with this one that I should have a look at too?

Cali, that is your IMT valve (Intake Manifold Tuning valve). In short, what it does is it alters the length of the intake to help improve the performance of the motor as it gets up in RPMs (shortens the length of the intake, matching the tube length with the air requirements).

I have to admit to having stared at that valve more than a few times, wondering "I wonder what the heck that gadget does???", and then simply writing it off to one of the mysteries and miracles of the Church of the Jaguar.

Thermo's response in identifying it led me to seek a bit more info. (That link is a pretty short and enlightening description).

Having to place all information into layman's terms that I can grasp (much like "the internet is like a series of tubes"), I am now confident in the knowledge that there is a computer in my X-Type that knows how to play the Trombone.

(Maybe I should have posted this in the earlier thread "Things I Didn't Know My X-Type Could Do!")

Default tuning tubes

I was told there are two sets of "o" rings in each, common area for for vac. leaks. being you know there leaking your on the road to a succesful repair.

billjork, there is only 1 o-ring one each valve. But, there are 2 different o-rings. There were the old black ones that were prone to failure due to the heat of the engine and now you have green o-rings that seem to last longer. There are also 2 valves. So, that might be where you are getting the 2 o-rings from too.

Talking 'o'rings

ARE WE TALKING TUNING TUBES OR INTAKE GASKETS("o"RINGS) SORRY IF I MISLED PEOPLE; DEALER TOLD ME THERE'S TWO ON EA. TUNING TUBE AND HOW TO TEST THEM.

billbjork, the IMT valves have a single o-ring each. But, if you are talking the silver pieces (ie, the actual intake itself), then yes, there are 2 sets of o-rings for that. You have what are called the intake gaskets and then the manifold gaskets. The intake gaskets are mounted between the two halves of the intake and those are the ones that most people are familiar with. Then you have the manifold gaskets. Those are mounted between the intake manifold and the heads themselves.

Hopefully that will clarify things a little bit.

Okay, so I went to the dealer and the guy was actually really nice. According to him, the factory seals are notorious for leaking after so much time. He sold me two seals, one for each valve, part number C2S40669005 for $5.06 each and it fixed the problem.

He also strongly recommended new inlet-manifold gaskets XR843536006 (probably since they were $13.23 each and I needed 6 of them) but since I was doing spark plugs I figured why not. Car runs notably better.

NEW QUESTION!!! Is it bad if the area the plug is sitting in is full of oil? because only one cylinder had this (front right from driver's seat) and there was a ton of oil there, and I have a feeling that that's not a good thing since none of the other plugs had this.

Cali, not necessarily bad as in your motor is going to blow up, but it isn't something that you should ignore either. What is going to happen is over time, the oil is going to eat at the rubber boot and lead to a misfire on that cylinder due to the spark jumping through the oil, not through the cylinder(plug). The fix is pretty straight foward. You will have to access the valve cover, remove the cover, replace the o-rings that seal between the plug well and valve cover and reassemble. Not a hard job, but you may find that you have to remove a fair amount of stuff whether it is the front or rear valve cover.

Thermo, Yeah, I notice it misfires at low rpm under load, I figured it was a symptom of the vacuum leak but looks like the oil is the culprit. I'll buy the gaskets and see what happens....

**and would anyone want 'how to' style pictures/posts of the job? I wouldn't mind posting a step-by-step if it could help someone else.

Hey guys! I'm a new Jag owner (03' X type, 5 spd manual) and I LOVE it!! Can't decide if I like the looks I get or ride / performance more..

Anyway, I've been looking to do the IMT o-ring and intake o-ring changes (want to change plugs too). I'm getting the check engine light intermittently and the cruise control is not available most of the time. No codes (other then the P1000 readiness code) indicating that I need to complete the correct drive cycle. From what I've been reading around this site, most everything points to the intake seals as the cause for the MIL and no cruise. Do you agree? Or am I way off track here?
