What winter tires and wheels are the best?
I noticed the tires on the car I bought for my son are more of a performance tire than winter tire.(go figure the car is from Miami). So who has the best tire, and also is ther a company that sells a tire wheel package that is resonable? thanks, bob
I'm really happy with my Goodyear Ultragrips and they were reasonable at about $100 each.
Edit: Try tirerack.com - I just ordered a set of 17" alloys with snow tires for $800 shipped. Mounted/balanced and ready to bolt on.

I had Hankook IceBear W300's on the OEM 16" wheels (had aftermarket wheels for the rest of the year). Very pleased with them: http://www.discounttiredirect.com/di...%2FPerformance
The deal Jeremy posted is pretty good too.

This is the second season I have run on these studded Pirelli's from Tire Rack http://goo.gl/8NdV5. They perform FLAWLESSLY, albeit there is a bit of racket when the studs hit dry pavement.
They showed almost no wear whatsoever from last season, although over 100mph the studs will shoot out (I lost three of them that way, they sound like being shot at!).
I mounted them up last week on our 2002 w/AWD and made a three-state run in the snowstorm. Outside temps averaged -8f (-22c) and road conditions were mostly compacted snow and a LOT of black ice on the sunny sides of the hills. The cold did not make them stiff or slippery, and parts of Wyoming went by at up to 90mph at times, they are THAT "solid" on the ice.
Like a cat on the curtains, they grip grip grip!
The only tire I can think of that I would trade them off for are these: http://www.qtires.com/, they are retractable studded tires a'la James Bond.
Driving a Jag kitty that can retract it's claws is just such a nifty concept I gotta get 'em!

mphy98, if you were a bit closer to me, I would say the ones wasting away in my garage...still for sale. Guess there really aren't enough X-types around where I live.

Mohrd, you should just post those up on Craigslist and list some other cars that have a compatible bolt pattern and wheel offsets. I sold the snow tires off a fairly rare car (my previous daily driver, a Nissan 240SX) to a Honda Accord owner a few days after posting my ad on Craigslist. He had the same bolt pattern and compatible offsets, so the wheels fit just fine.
19" Blizzaks. and now, a martini... Day off tomorrow.
cheers.

I thought I was a big spender with Porsche wheels and monster truckin' 225/40/18, but you you win. 225/35/19 is always > 225/40/18. Unless maybe I could get 18x10s in front also. Hmm?
There you go, it's always good to have something to shoot for.
I use the Dunlop Graspic DS-3 on scrapyard sourced 16" cost around 500.00 all said and done.
I always size down with snow tires, both with the width and the rims size. makes cutting through deep/wet snow a lot easier.

Yep....wider isn't better in the deep snow.
Agreed, thinner the width of the tire, the easier to slice through the snow...more surface area means more ease of slippage.
With all that said, my 19" Blizzaks are flawless in the snow. LOVE them.
