Hi Everyone -Have viewed many of your helpful posts in the past so thought I'd ask if anyone has run into this "situation" and found a fix.
(73k miles 2004 X-Type 3.0)

Lately when I hit 26/27mph I start to hear a soft humming/buzzing sound and can't pinpoint where it's coming from. It stops once I hit 30mph & doesn't come back until I slow down to 26/27, and stops at 25mph. I don't drive the car much and thought maybe it was from the cold weather, I'll wait and see if it gets worse or goes away, but my transfer case went in the meantime and I had it replaced. Now I figured I'd wait to see if the buzz/humming was from that, but no, it is still there. Checked the rpms during the buzz/humming and they seem to be in line with the car's speed.
Any help, suggestions, history you can provide would be appreciated.

There was a useful post on here a few days ago when someone said the had found that the roll restrictor mount had caused the whine in the propshaft, maybe something similar on yours?

 

lynn, what you are experiencing is the notorious propshaft bearing "failure" that is inherit with owning an xtype. This bearing holds the rear driveshaft and almost directly underneath the center armrest. Some members have been able to grease this bearing and to get it to quiet down, but I tried this on my carrier bearing and was not successful. If I were you, I would not replace the bearing unless it is making the noise when it is not cold outside. These bearings tend to squeal when it's cold outside simply due to the rubber housing getting too cold to flex and due to ice within the bearing itself. I have had this problem on my car for two years and have just learned to live with it, but I would recommend that you switch this bearing if it's making noise at a moderate temperature.

If you are going to replace this bearing, you either need a whole rear driveshaft assembly with the carrier bearing already installed on it, or you need a press to remove the old bearing and put on the new bearing. I would recommend pulling the shaft yourself and bringing it along with the new bearing to a shop and just having them swap over the bearing.

disguay, what do you consider a "moderate temperature"?

Mine makes the annoying noises almost certainly if it's -10 degrees celsius or colder, for the first kilometer or so. If it's -20 or colder, they may be constant. In 0 to -5 they are very random, I often get the high whine at about 50kph, and if I stay at 50kph it goes away in maybe 3-5 seconds.

I would say a moderate temperature is anything above 40 degrees Fahrenheit. I get the high speed whine sometimes, but I think that's just due to constructive interference at high speeds between the front and rear of the car.

 

Thank you for all your very helpful information. The cold weather may be the cause, a friend has been using my car in the mornings, 8-9am, and always comment as to the noise being loud and still going on, yet if I go out at 12, 1:00 (when its not as cold, and the engine has already been warmed up, not sure if that matters), but there is not much noise at all and sometimes I don't hear it at all. Can't wait until it really warms up to see if it stops completely. And I won't do repairs to the car until then...Again, thank you very much!

 

Hmm, alright. It has yet to be over +1 celsius since the noises first started for me, so I'll wait for spring anxiously...

lynn44, engine temp shouldn't really matter, but I've noticed that often the noises are gone when I drive the car some time after it has been on a motorway or such, as the drivetrain is still "warm" (friction warms the bearing and so on).

 

We were fortunate to have one day where the temp was 41, drove the car and the whining noise was completely gone, not a peep. Next day with temp under 40 it was back. Now I'm wondering, didn't I drive my car last winter on any day when it was under 40~ anyway, thanks again.

 

I had mine greased a few weeks ago and it has been silent since.

 

I stopped the whining at 125 to 130 mph by removing my wife from the passenger seat.

 

That seems extreme. Greasing her didn't work?

 

A coating of Saddle Soap improves the seat leather enormously and also reduces the ejection force required at speed.

Anything else you choose to do with Saddle Soap should be in the privacy of your own home and not discussed here.

I've had this same issue for a few years now and every time the propshaft bearing whines (mine is about 27/28 mph) I found that a generous blast of lithium grease from a spray can with a straw, quietens it down for anther year.

Now, whenever the MOT is due, I bring along a can of lithium grease spray and ask the guys to blast the bearing while the car is on the ramp and this keeps it quiet.

 

I'm afraid to ask what (or who) broke that arm.

This is another issue on my never ending list of things to get fixed. Think I'll try the lithium grease spray idea and see how that works out.
