currently in the process of painting all the chrome trim on my black xtype and wondering how to remove the chrome trim around the windows? TIA

 

I think that if you peel back the window run channel along that trim piece you will see some rivets that you can drill out. The rear one is attached the same way with rivets and to the piece of glass so that whole massive piece has to come out. and the window stays attached. Thats how we replaced them at the dealer. The glass may separate with some black windshield sealant holding it together.

 

On my '02 the rear trim piece was held on with double sided tape, had to install a new one & used the 3m double sided foam tape (low profile stuff) 4 months and still good to go

BTW, what are you using to paint the chrome...

 

im sanding them down and using a primer, then using a specialty paint thats matched to the car color and has a clear coat built into it, its made from a automotive paint supply company.

 

Anyone know how to make that window trim "chrome" look like new again, short of actually sending out to be actually chromed?

(for some reason, I can hear Exexpat saying "just get some shiny 3M Duct Tape!!!")

Some Dipstick ran a buffing wheel with about 80 grit over mine in about 7 different directions, but the surface is still smooth and sound. I like the chrome contrast, and have tried using 2000 grit plastic polishing compound to no avail. Nothing seems to work, and I don't trust the shiny tape to stay stuck in the hot sun.

Also - hey, Exexpat: "Mukilteo" is an old NW Indian word for "pothole" (or "big big rut in trail"). How the heck to manage to keep your "X" with a body clearance of only 1 1/2 inches looking so sharp???

 

I believe the trim is solid Aluminium... super high grit after you remove it should help
