Wipers
I just purchased a 2004 XType and I have a question about the intermittent wipers. When they are on, they only wipe one direction each time during the intermittent time. What I mean by that is, the wipers will come up across the windshield to the top of the stroke, wait what ever the time delay you set and then wipe down. It will not wipe up and down as one stroke then wait the intermitient time.
Is this right?

RE: Wipers
turn the wipers to off
then turn the dial to "AUTO"
then lift the wiper stalk upwards 1 click
your mow in auto
with key on put your hand over the sensor at the back of the rear view mirror
from outside of the car
let us know what happens
i think your getting auto/intermittent timing thing mixed up
then turn the dial to "AUTO"
then lift the wiper stalk upwards 1 click
your mow in auto
with key on put your hand over the sensor at the back of the rear view mirror

RE: Wipers
Slickman, your wipers should cycle up and down in one continuous motion when on intermittent wiper. If they are pausing at the full up position, then odds are, you are looking at a bad wiper motor. There is an electrical wafer on the wiper motor that lets the wiper motor know the position of the sweep. If you develop a bad spot in this, the wiper motor will stop. Then, it will only continue again when the motor is pulsed again to start a new sweep. In your case, the dead spot is at the full sweep position (ie, wiper all the way up). Unfortunately, the wafer can not be replaced by itself normally. So, you will end up buying a whole new wiper motor/wafer complex.

This is one thing I found very confusing.. I can find were auto is! There is no markings that state "AUTO"..

RE: Wipers
If this is the case, how difficult is it to get at the wiper motor?

RE: Wipers
slickman, to remove the wiper motor, you need to remove both wiper arms. Then you will need to remove the cowl at the base of the windshield. Next you will remove the two bolts (1 at each end) holding the wiper connecting rod (connects the left and right wiper arms). After the rod is removed, you can unbolt the wiper motor and remove it.

Looking at the big 3 auto parts stores (Autozone, Napa, and Advance/Checkers/Kragen/etc), non of them list a wiper motor for our cars. Now, with that being said, you might be able to special order one in through one of them. Your most likely one to get something like that is NAPA as they seem to have a larger supplier of electrical stuff from my experience.
So, if you can't get it through special order, then you are more then likely looking at going to the dealership. There is a single ad on e-bay for a used wiper motor from out of a 2004 X-type at http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Jagua...spagenameZWD1V. But, that would be the junkyard stuff that you are not truely interested in. But, that is $100. So, you can take that and get an idea of what the motor is going to run at the dealership.
