Default Wood on steering wheel

My 2094 XType 3.0 Saloon has a steering wheel with controls that are on the spokes not along side air bag, and also wood on top and bottom sections. I want to clean and then refinish the leather sections with some dye I am seeing online. Also plan to touch up some areas on leather driver seat too. But my question here is about the wood on steering wheel. It's pretty grain to me and in great shape. However there are a few what I can only describe as tiny wrinkles right where my left hand grips the steering wheel. They are very very small and I tried to photograph them but they don't show up. And it's only that one small spot where left hand touches. So now that I know they are there I can't help but get annoyed every time my hand touches that area. It's almost as if the grain underneath the thick clear coat is coming to the surface. Can I take some wet dry 1500 or 2000 grit sandpaper and hit those lightly or will that dull my wood finish? Any opinions on what to try?

I would think any time you take a abrasive to wood it will dull but I might suggest you do it on an underside of the steering wheel that is not seen and see what happens.
