Cool Wtf moment !

Good morning Jag family.... Small situation. Long story short.. i forgot the sunroof was open and it poured down raining. didn't notice it until the next morning. most of the rain had dried. started the car.. BOOM! 'GEAR BOX FAULT Code' i panic got my industrial dryer and dried off the J Gate shifter. A little laps in concentration and this happen.... look at the pic i've attached.
i called jaguar and the whole assembly will cost me 250.00. is there an easier fix and is it a Do-It-Your-Self project, replacing the J Gate ?

Thanks Family>>>

Nope, sorry, maybe look into getting one from a wrecker. But hears something to make you feel worse. Hate to do it but...the J gate has nothing to do with a gearbox fault code. Your car has a transmission control module, it's behind the fuse box inside the car. Above the dead foot petal. That's what got the moisure in it likely. Also some of our resident geniouses here might know better but I think you might have to re-teach the TCM after you replace the J-Gate. Not to often is it required to replace the thing so.....

Well the light went out not to long after drying out the jgate.... I didn't think the jgate had anything to do with it until i went to Advanced Auto to reset the check engine light which came on as a result of the Gear Box Fault. The Code reader said something like gear shift position sensor was off. So ummm dunno. As far are the jgate being reprogrammed, i'm interested to hear from the tech geniuses in here to see what the prognosis will be.

Get a copy of Jaguar Technical Information System (JTIS) Issue 21. It covers your trans pretty well. Put in a different J-gate and go from there. The trans is cable shifted and so the JTIS will help with that. Your problem should go away after the J-gate is replaced.

Unfortunately the J-Gate Shifter is a "pass-thru" node in the vehicle's CAN Network. The network, from the Instrument Pack goes through the J-Gate [in and out] then to all the other modules, ECM, TCM etc. It getting so wet probably didn't do it any favors, and the melting didn't help either, I'm sure. If the codes and messages can't be cleared, you may have to change it out.
Luckily, no programming is necessary when changing out the J-Gate.

Good luck!

Here is a little guidance. It looks like it would probably come out without removing the console assembly, but believe me, it ain't happnin'.

Good luck!

Thanks for the pdf. i've printed them off and will use that as a guide.. doesn't look too difficult at a glance. but we'll see once i have everything off. but other than that.. it looks pretty straight forward.
