I am troubleshooting the same problem on my X-Type. What made you decide to change the O2 sensor in that location? What codes did you have previously? Was your engine running normally or did you experience any hesitation or jerking?

It moves the downstream O2 sensors out of the pipe so it reads just enough exhaust for the ecu to think everything is fine with cats.

The catalytic converters must be replaced. Changing the oxygen sensors is a waste of time and money.

While the sensors may be reading normal, the exhaust gasses when analysed, are not.

It depends on the law you have over there. I know that a V6 Cosworth engine passed emissions test over here without cats. I'm gonna fit custom made decat pipes on mine sometime soon and have it tested, if it passes going to leave it like that, if not then will refit cats.
